AR-18 was designed by ArmaLite in 1963 as a cheaper AR-15 alternative.
It uses stamped sheet metal instead of expensive aluminum forgings.
This rifle also directly influenced the British SA80 and German HK G36.

the SCAR, the SA80, the AUG, the HK416, and so on are all AR 18's internally and have not been able to meaningfully replace the AR 15.

The article says another option under consideration is “a fresh upgrade of the SA80”. Interested to see the reaction to that. There’s a strong #NeverABullpup feeling in some quarters.

Having used an SA80 during my time serving in the early 90’s I am grateful that H&K made some improvements. It was a woefully designed rifle, it would go rusty simply by showing it pictures of rain, the stoppages were horrific, and the plastic parts regularly became brittle and would fall off.

H&K actually, whilst being British owned, redesigned the SA80 to make it the L85A2. So the whole “German” thing is nothing more than a dog whistle in my opinion..

So kind of mix up the specs of the SA80 with whatever the specs are of the "standard assault rifle" is that H&K have in their catalogue and I'm getting close. So kind of Venn diagram it.

The British Army is soon to replace the SA80 standard rifle thats been the norm for a few decades now with a new weapon. One bidder is likely to be the German gun maker Heckler and Koch, now owned by a descendent of Napolean. (founded 1949, it was also once British)
