Botswana has been commended for showing commitment towards advancing regional trade integration between 29 countries in the southern and eastern African counties. Botswana is among the countries like Angola, Burundi, Egypt, Eswatini, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe rooting for the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), East African Community (EAC), and Southern African Development Community (SADC) Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) Agreement. Speaking during a courtesy visit, she paid on Botswana's Trade and Entrepreneurship Minister, Tiroeaone Ntsima, in Gaborone, COMESA Secretary General, Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe, said Botswana's commitment is strengthening cooperation among COMESA, EAC and SADC member states through the Tripartite Free Trade Area. Kapwepwe, who also served as the chairperson of the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite Free Trade Area Agreement taskforce, further noted that Botswana is fostering harmonisation of trade policies and removal of non-tariff barriers and other barriers such as huge export and import fees. "I want to sincerely thank the Republic of Botswana for stepping up to join others, namely Egypt, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda, Burundi and Namibia, in the list of member and partner states that have so far ratified the TFTA agreement for the tripartite agreement to enter into force." TFTA creates a combined population of 600 million people covering half of the member states of the African Union and a gross domestic product (GDP) of over $1 trillion. The enlarged market aims to promote the smooth movement of goods and services across borders, as well as allowing member countries to harmonise regional trade policies to promote equal competition.

The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) continues to amplify the regional collective voice through its participation at the ongoing 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) in New York City. In an interview with the Communications Officer at the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat, Anethe Mutambanengwe said the 16-member bloc's presents demonstrate the region's commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation. Mutambanengwe said the region's participation provides an important platform for advancing Southern Africa's priorities at the global stage. She said SADC priorities include climate resilience, peace and security, sustainable development, economic transformation, regional integration and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). "Through its participation in the General Assembly, SADC continues to amplify the collective voice of Southern Africa, strengthen strategic partnerships and advocate for global solutions that respond to the realities and development aspirations of the people of the region." At a time when the Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing war, outgoing United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in his opening remarks, called on the international community to work together in confronting the complex challenges facing humanity and building a more peaceful, just and sustainable world.

The International University of Management has introduced its Graduate School of Business to the SADC business community, positioning it as a platform for advanced professional development, research, consultancy and innovation. The school, established in 2024, is seeking stronger partnerships with businesses and industry to develop solutions that respond to challenges within the Namibian and regional context. Director of the Graduate School of Business, Blessing Tafirenyika, called on industry to provide professionals who can serve as guest lecturers and contribute practical experience to the training of students. "As we introduce this school, we are not saying we have fully developed an institution, but we are actually inviting you as our key stakeholders to say, 'Come, let's come together to build this vision.' We are just an institution that has got greater commitments and willingness, but we can't do this alone." Tafirenyika encouraged businesses to also give their time by participating in the school's boards and programme development, saying industry feedback is important in ensuring that graduates are equipped with relevant skills. IUM Founder and Council Chair David Namwandi says the Graduate School of Business was established to address a need for upskilling professionals and strengthening the link between academic knowledge and industry experience. Staff Reporter SOUTHERN African countries and China are set to deepen cooperation on regional pharmaceutical manufacturing, with the SADC, UNAIDS, the Government of China and the Global Health Innovation Institute identifying opportunities to expand local production of medicines, vaccines and other health technologies. The collaboration follows a joint visit to pharmaceutical and health technology production facilities in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, South Africa, where the delegation assessed existing capabilities in pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing, biotechnology, genomics and diagnostics. The partners identified priority areas to help Southern African countries increase domestic production of quality-assured medicines and health products, reduce reliance on imports and strengthen regional health security. The collaboration with China is expected to link technology, expertise, investment and manufacturing capabilities with the region’s growing production capacity. “This exchange was about moving from ambition to practical action,” said Eva Kiwango, Director and Representative of the UNAIDS Office in China. Kiwango said the region has the capacity to expand pharmaceutical manufacturing and improve access to essential HIV and other health products, but this would require sustained investment, aligned regulatory frameworks, technology transfer, skills development, strategic multilateral partnerships and innovative financing. The initiative aligns with the United Nations’ Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS, which calls for greater health sovereignty and strengthened cooperation on local and regional production of HIV and other health technologies as part of efforts to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. An official from China’s National Disease Control and Prevention Administration said the exchange had strengthened mutual understanding and identified concrete opportunities for cooperation between China and Southern Africa. The official said combining strengths in policy, technology, manufacturing and market development could help advance local pharmaceutical production, enhance health security and support sustainable access to quality health products. Key priorities identified during the exchange include developing a regional list of essential HIV and sexual and reproductive health commodities, improving demand forecasting and pooled procurement, and creating more predictable markets for African manufacturers. The partners also agreed to advance technology transfer, skills development and investment opportunities to expand local pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity, while strengthening regulatory systems to support quality-assured production. Ms Xiaoxia An, CEO of Desano Pharmaceutical Group, said the visit highlighted significant opportunities for cooperation between China and Southern Africa in pharmaceutical development. She said combining strengths in manufacturing, innovation and market development could help strengthen local production capacity, improve access to quality medicines and contribute to better health outcomes across the region. More than half of people living with HIV who are not receiving lifesaving antiretroviral treatment are in sub-Saharan Africa. For UNAIDS, expanding pharmaceutical manufacturing in the region is therefore aimed not only at increasing production, but also at building more resilient health systems and ensuring timely access to health innovations and essential medicines. Foreign direct investment (FDI) has long occupied a privileged place in development strategy, particularly in economies seeking capital, technology, productive capacity and access to international markets. However, the relationship between attracting foreign investors and building environmentally and socially sustainable economies is far less automatic than conventional investment policy often assumes. A new paper, "Human Capital, Foreign Direct Investment and Sustainable Regional Development in SADC Economies," by Darlington Chizema of Sol Plaatje University, published in the journal Sustainability, examines this tension across 13 Southern African Development Community economies. Covering 2003 to 2022, the research separates the factors associated with attracting FDI from those linked to environmental, social and governance performance. The findings complicate a familiar development narrative. Institutional quality and economic growth are positively associated with FDI over the long term, but higher aggregate FDI is negatively associated with ESG performance in the long-run model. Infrastructure and natural capital, meanwhile, display positive long-run relationships with sustainability outcomes, suggesting that the conditions that bring capital into an economy are not necessarily those that determine what the capital leaves behind. The Southern African Migration and Integration Network (SAMIN) seeks to contribute to addressing some of these challenges through research and documentation, lobbying and advocacy, information sharing, and networking and the sharing of good practices across the SADC region. Immanuel Simao, founder of SAMIN, and Basetsane Mosia, the Secretariat, discussed the organisation's work, the state of migration in the region and the importance of strengthening cooperation around migration and shared more.

Staff Reporter Joseph Mukendwa, Interim Head of the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme, emphasised that Namibia and South Africa can leverage their respective strengths to advance green industrialisation within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). “For us as Namibia, as I indicated, the bigger play is green industrialisation, and I must admit that we cannot do that if we just look at Namibia developing these projects alone. It’s also important that, as we are coming here to South Africa, we talk about regional collaboration, regional integration, how Namibia and South Africa can work together and be the champions of SADC regional green industrialisation,” Mukendwa said. Mukendwa made these remarks at the African Green Hydrogen Summit, taking place in Cape Town, South Africa, this week. The summit has also seen significant new financing commitments announced for green hydrogen and green industrial development, including €20 million in EU grant funding for South Africa, with the potential to mobilise a further €200 million from KfW; an additional €37 million through the Global Gateway for South Africa; and US$20 million in reimbursable grant funding from the African Development Bank for four projects across Morocco, Egypt, South Africa and Namibia. The Southern African Migration Network (SAMIN) has launched its Namibian Chapter under the theme "Building Bridges: Advancing Migration Dialogue in Namibia". Established in 2019, SAMIN aligns with SADC objectives and advocates for the rights of refugees and migrants across the Southern African region. The launch of the Namibia Chapter forms part of SAMIN's broader efforts to expand migration dialogue across Southern Africa and encourage cooperation among governments and all other stakeholders. "We will be working collaboratively to advance the agenda, which is mainly around advocating for best practices on migration and for advocating for better treatment for migrants and asylum seekers and refugees in the region, but also on the continent," said SAMIN Secretariat Spokesperson Basetsane Mosia. SAMIN Namibia Launch Coordinator Immanuel Simao said the new chapter will create a platform for different sectors to work together and generate evidence-based research on migration in Namibia. "There's no concerted effort in dealing with the migration issues, so that's what SAMIN is about, bringing everyone together so we can have these conversations in terms of migration and how we can make it work in the Namibian context and overall in the Southern African regional context as well." He said the network aims to address the fragmented approach to migration issues and ensure that migrants themselves are part of discussions affecting their lives. Member of Parliament Utaara Mootu said Namibia's approach to migration needs to take into account the country's own history, arguing that movement across African territories existed long before colonial borders were established. "Africa alone cannot be simultaneously excited to preach about regional integration while we remain excessively suspicious about African mobility. We cannot continue to celebrate continental free trade at the AU while treating the movement of African people who live within that, in whom must trade, who must study and invest within that free trade as an afterthought." She said migration cannot be addressed by immigration officials or law enforcement alone but requires cooperation between government, civil society, legal practitioners, researchers and the media. The Southern Africa Migration Network Namibia Chapter aims to rethink migration within the country, examining how Namibia can balance its national interests with regional cooperation on migration issues.
