I saw a comment that they should switch NASA budget to defense budget. I think that’s a great idea youtube.com/shorts/XFj5k...

They want to turn NASA from a research institution to another propaganda arm of the administration. And they’re only doing it because Trump’s Space Force failed to launch.
Once again showing how they value short term optics over the people’s long term needs.

The amazing, letter-perfect performance of NASA this week is a ferocious rebuke to the right-wing fools who constantly tell us that for-profit businesses always do a job better than the government.

This note describes how working life is like for a scientist in federal agency.

The post is about NIH but what it is described is the same we are experiencing at NASA Earth Sciences. Written a few months ago, it is still very valid.

What Happens When Science Is Asked to Pretend This Is Normal
In our All-Hands meetings before I left NIH, our leaders were always trying to think of ways to accommodate the new leadership, pitching ideas they thought would fit the “MAHA” agenda.

NASA Earth Science is being destroyed little by little:

divert money originally committed for contractor scientists (like post docs) salaries to pay to those recently retired civil servants who voluntarily left but are still being paid (a sort of) severance

The 2026 budget directive tells NASA to protect the Goddard Space Library, not following the directive is illegal. Visit the link in our bio or search tr.ee/save-nasa to contact your rep. and urge that they make NASA follow the budget directive.

An appeal to the new administrator to save #NASA Earth Sciences.

I think it is well said.

But at the same time late in the sense that the damage is already structural and irreparable.

Now it is a matter of starting over (if it ever happens)

The NY Times and other news outlets reported that GSFC decreased its workforce by 11%.

This figure is misleading; the actual reduction was significantly higher. Here are at least two reasons why:

NASA will finally have a 2026 budget and an administrator

but still not good news for Earth Sciences.

Despite the title of this article, I take issue with this "better" scenario. It may reflect the author’s bias.
