I recently advised my university to ditch carbon offsets as there is abundant evidence these do not reduce our climate impacts. If SBTi is to continue to play a positive role, then it must not let businesses off the hook by recommending carbon offsetting.

I recently advised my university to ditch carbon offsets as there is abundant evidence these do not reduce our climate impacts. If SBTi is to continue to play a positive role, then it must not let businesses off the hook by recommending carbon offsetting.

It is remarkable how much this whole debate in Australia reminds me of the incredibly toxic debate around offset inclusion in the SBTi a few years ago. In both cases, the amount of $$ involved in generating and trading offsets just makes people go truly feral in the process of defending it
