like yeah people in this thread you're doing a great job of listing Female F&SF Authors but that's really not what the guy is on about, he wants Dudes fronting his stories instead of Chicks
October 12, 2026 at 5:48 PM
I think with the Asimov's and F&SF that may be a good thing 😬 but I hear you, and yes! I find it helpful to hear and even sometimes when authors post that they were invited to a project but had the story rejected, I was like whoa! That was very good context! We keep trying is the main thing 💗🖤

I do suspect that there is a reason that the Black Library's "bolter porn" subgenre does such massive numbers. It's arguable that as "masculine" writing fades out of literary SF/F circles, it's increasingly found in pulp fiction.
October 12, 2026 at 5:47 PM
I think there is an issue, if I can use that word, which is that as the proportion of SF/F readers has tilted to predominantly represent women, the most masculine SF/F writing is harder to find. I dont use "masculine" in a praiseworthy fashion, just "the stuff that is distinctly masculine in taste".

For sure! I have be trying to place stories in certain magazines since 2015. I have a lot of Clarkesworld rejections. I did get a hold this year which was the first time ever! I never got into Asimovs, F&SF, I've never sold a story to SH, which I'll keep trying on. Rejections happen a lot!

Many of the best SF-F writers are women.

Encouraging folks to take some time to read @jasonsanford.bsky.social's latest Genre Grapevine which does a very thorough, but also not too overwhelming job, of explaining the MRM issues for the past few years with Asimov's, Analog, F&SF -- consider the patreon tiers Jason has as well 👇🏻

Yeah, I know that feeling! I built a real collection living in Germany and Mexico -- often aspirational books that are classics of the language.

I finally realized that if I'm unlikely to read literary classics in English, I'm not going to do it in another language 😅 hence reading mostly sf/f now.
October 12, 2026 at 4:15 PM
I've come to the opinion that sf/f in translation > classics for learning! Classics are hard enough to read even in English, but a pulpy scifi novel I'm kinda familiar with is a good way to just see words being used and pick up patterns.

Huh. I guess I replicated the f&sf paperback novel experience I was having when I was a teen.

This is absolute fucking bullshit

just off the top of my head, as a SF/F nerd of the 1980s I read

Anne McCaffery
Robin McKinley
Diane Duane
Mercedes Lackey
Ursula K Leguin

Etc

Yes I ALSO read a lot of David Drake, Larry Niven and so on but the GENDER DIDN'T MATTER

Back home and I find that non-stop October is still going. Thus two* things, second thing first.
I've done another blog post on Haverin, this time on what is in it. Will I accidentally admit to my favourite 'child' or just waffle on about a personal milestone?

I mentioned to a younger woman who complimented me on this outfit that some folks older than me (I’m 61) have said I’m too old for skirts this short, and she scoffed at the idea. Another reason I love my “found family” of SF/F fandom.
October 12, 2026 at 6:53 AM
I don't get it. I've sold stories, for which someone else supplied illustrations, to multiple magazines, and I've never heard anything before about these being tricky contracts. If I ever sold a story to Asimov's, Analog, or F&SF, I'd be happy for someone else to illustrate it, and ...

The whole thing a step away from GW’s house vibe and toward the general overdesigned and form before function approach to sf/f that became dominant in the 00s

Not happy about the SF-Seattle game. What the F was that?!?

Ugh.
October 11, 2026 at 11:47 PM
Looks like the normal econ critiques are that the instrument is weak (first stage F is small), and maybe that distance from SF covaries with Starbucks openings/distance from Seattle.

But notably, the first negative account here doesn’t seem to even understand the identification issues at play
