I guess we have to hand it to the car advocates: they got the city to admit that 20 foot fire lanes are a want, not a need, of SFD. Looking forward to seeing this new standard applied to People Street projects across the city to narrow streets and give more space back to people walking.

A journalist should get @transportation.seattle.gov to comment on this and not let them defer to SFD. It's an approved fire lane. It was approved not to balance competing life safety issues but for driver convenience. What is the new standard? Will this standard be documented in Streets Illustrated?
The new fire lane width in Seattle is 9.5 feet. Remember that next time you ask @transportation.seattle.gov for traffic-calming. They don't need 20 feet anymore.
