Btw, SFTSV causes hemorrhagic fever, can be transmitted by ticks or contact with infected animals, and has rapidly expanded its range south from East Asia where it emerged. We need to rethink animal production practices when they clearly contribute to emergence & amplify outbreaks.

OMG! I can finally share my joy to see my SFTSV work published in @natcomms.nature.com! This adventure started by the award of my MSCA grant and my move to the Kohl and @brennanlab.bsky.social at @cvrinfo.bsky.social. Let's chat about how we discovered novel tick anti-viral effectors!

Researchers in #ScienceTranslationalMedicine have designed a cocktail of camelid nanobodies that protects mice and ferrets from severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (#SFTSV), an emerging and deadly tick-borne virus. https://scim.ag/3X7EZGJ
A rationally designed cocktail of nanobodies elicited by heterologous vaccination confers protection against SFTSV in preclinical models
Epitope-diverse nanobody cocktails neutralize severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus and prevent lethal infection in animals.

At Scripps there was CAMPP, focused on CoVs, flavis, & hemorrhagic fever viruses (filoviruses: Ebola, Marburg; bunyaviruses: SFTSV; arenaviruses: Lassa). They were advancing promising oral candidates as well as finding drugs with new mechanisms of action.

Viruses are invariably named, as in SFTSV, HCV, poliovirus, but each have species assignments recorded and defined by the ICTV. There is no intention that virus names are somehow replaced by species names (eg. SFTSV by Bandavirus dabieense), any more than we would take Canis familiaris for a walk.
December 29, 2024 at 2:50 PM
The ICTV's change to a binomial format (genus + species epithet) is after all followed in the rest of biology.

If we paraphrase the article as:

Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) were frequently infected with SFTSV (Bandavirus dabieense)

I'm really not sure why this so problematic

SFTS, a tick-borne disease with up to 30% mortality, lacks vaccines. New platforms like mRNA and viral vectors show promise in targeting key viral proteins.

#Ticks are more than simple, passive hosts for pathogens; they possess their own innate immune system.

Researchers identified new proteins and key immune mechanisms in ticks that defend against SFTS Virus, with far-reaching implications for controlling tick-borne diseases.
