On 6 November 2018, we felt like pioneers! We, the Social Innovation Community (SIC) project, participated in the 1st “Social Innovation Village” hosted by the #WebSummit in Lisbon, thanks to the Social Good Accelerator gathering 24 projects from across Europe to put social good at the heart of innovation. Our mission was to share the #SIDeclaration with European policymakers, and so we did. As a result, Carlos Moedas, EU Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, declared “Innovation today is about purpose... In the European Union, we are going to put more money into social innovation, not because it’s trendy, but because we believe that the future of innovation is about social innovation”. This high-level endorsement is great, but our work isn’t over yet. Our main goal is to influence negotiations on the next EU budget and programmes, now, and get further support from EU institutions and Member States. This is the only way for our policy ideas, to which more than 350 people from 19 EU countries contributed, to be translated into concrete actions.
