The Space Mission Planning Advisory Group has the job of planning missions to Earth-impacting asteroids; if that should be ever be necessary.

It is not yet so.

Second day at #PDC2025. We are discussing today the results of the #SMPAG impact simulation exercise, which has extended from last August until a couple of weeks ago. It has been an amazing exercise!

The Space Mission Planning Advisory Group is in charge of analyzing potential deflection missions.

They will be holding an evaluation meeting about early May of this year, after all data from the current observing opportunity is in: www.cosmos.esa.int/web/smpag/home.

A rebuild of the DART asteroid deflection spacecraft could deflect something like 2024 YR4 by ~2500 km per year, enough to prevent an impact if it should be necessary.

International efforts to address the impact hazard are coordinated by the International Asteroid Warning Network (iawn.net) and the Space Mission Planning Advisory Group (www.cosmos.esa.int/web/smpag).

I see the Space Mission Planning Advisory Group (SMPAG) meeting is scheduled for Wednesday in Vienna. Given the discovery of 2024 YR4 (that newly discovered potentially hazardous asteroid) it should be a real, "But, Captain, it's only Wednesday!" day.

The few percent chance of asteroid 2024 YR4 colliding with the Earth offers an extra literal interpretation of the movie "Don't Look Up" that frankly nobody needed 🔭 But JAXA Planetary Defense did weigh in with comments on twitter! 🛰️ First, we're hunting these asteroids down & we'll likely see more:
On January 29, 2025, NASA and ESA have announce that asteroid 2024 YR4, which was discovered at the end of last year, has a 1.3% chance of colliding with the Earth on December 22, 2032. With an approximately 99% chance of no collision, immediate action is not needed. However, we need to pay attention to how this collision probability may change until the asteroid moves too far away for observations near the end of April. Currently, observations of celestial bodies approaching the Earth are being conducted as a rapid pace. It is therefore likely that we will see more discoveries of objects like 2024 YR4 that may collide with the Earth. It is essential that we have the correct information, and that we respond calmly. JAXA’s Planetary Defense Team is therefore also closely monitoring this asteroid. By Yoshikawa Makoto, JAXA Planetary Defense Team Lead. This is the first time that the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) has released a "Potential Asteroid Impact Notification”. Planetary Defense that has the goal of protecting "Planet Earth" from asteroid impact is an essential challenge that should be tackled with the cooperation of humanity. 2024 YR4's perihelion is 0.85 au, so a spacecraft launched to intercept at the 2028 approach would not get there right at perihelion.

But you make a good point about limited launch windows.

I will defer to the trajectory analysts working with SMPAG on this one.

I read in an article once that since 1980s around 12,000 NEOs passed by Earth, and the 12 that have hit Earth (i.e. not burned up on entry) were only detected in the final 24 hours of approach. SMPAG plans will only be relevant if detection gives us time enough to invoke a plan.

Asteroid #2024YRN discovered at the end of 2024, has a very small probability of striking Earth in 2032 (~1.2%). IWAN and SMPAG (UN-endorsed asteroid reaction groups) have been activated to monitor and assess the risks.
