This is history repeating. During the ‘68 Columbia protests, CUNY students also held similar protests, with demands that paralleled Columbia’s Black student demands as opposed to SNCC’s. Their punishments and physical abuse by police were generally harsher.

You’re comparing apples and oranges here. SNCC’s “front lines” were metaphoric and domestic.

If you want a 60s counterpart to Gaza, it’s Vietnam. And the vast majority of student protests against *that* foreign war took place domestically, not on the literal front lines.

Today is the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday.

In this election year, let us who live in the USA remember how important the right to vote is. And let us exercise that right.

In 1962, LaFayette became the director of SNCC’s Alabama Voter Registration Project. In early 1963, he and his wife, fellow activist Colia Liddell, moved to Selma, Ala. — a territory considered by many in the movement to be too hostile and dangerous for effective organizing. /6

New: We should treat civil rights leaders as the Founding Fathers and Mothers of a new republic. Today’s liberalism debates (over identity, the state, and capitalism) are their unfinished quarrels.

This reminds me of John Doar's meeting with Freedom Summer volunteers before they went down to Mississippi.

He sympathized with the work but told them, accurately, that the federal government couldn't protect them and they were on their own. Some were furious; others appreciated the straight talk.

Textbook stories on CRM focus on segregation. But a bigger issue was daily, random, brutal violence against all African Americans and white allies.

Students need to learn that history -- to see the 🧵& learn how to organize for change.

As a student at Yale Law School, Norton served as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and helped run SNCC’s New York office. In the summer of 1963, she worked directly under Bayard Rustin, serving as a primary staff organizer for the historic March on Washington. /5

I was recently reading a history text which looked at the SNCC's influence on the passage of the Civil Rights Act. And, yeah, the instinct to tone police & scold the most vulnerable groups seems to be an unshakable tendency of centrists and far too many liberals.

Today we honor Lorraine Hansberry.

Whether raising funds, rallying support, or writing to educate Northern audiences about SNCC’s mission, she was constantly in solidarity with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
