1 Aug 1940 // Submarine HMS Oswald was on the surface off Cape Spartivento at just before midnight, charging her batteries, when she was sunk by Italian destroyer Ugolino Vivaldi. Italian forces had been alerted to the submarine's presence by an unsuccessful attack she had made on a convoy. [1/4]

Milky way in Sardinia

I was shooting the milky way at Capo Spartivento, south Sardinia, but there was a thunderstorm coming from africa starting with lightning strikes every 2 minutes. What a fantastic lucky night to shoot the Milky Way with lightning.

Pound was asked about the Board of Enquiry into Somerville's handling of the battle of Cape Spartivento, and he replied 'my boy, mistakes will always be made in war'. Somerville not impressed. It had caused a lot of disquiet among frontline admirals who knew DP would always defer to WSC

It may appear, at first, like the Galaxy is producing the lightning, but really it's the Earth. The featured nighttime landscape was taken from a southern tip of the Italian Island of Sardinia in early June. The foreground rocks and shrubs are near the famous Capo Spartivento Lighthouse, and the camera is pointed south toward Algeria in Africa. In the distance, across the Mediterranean Sea, a thunderstorm is threatening, with several electric lightning strokes caught together during this 25-second wide-angle exposure. Much farther in the distance, strewn about the sky, are hundreds of stars in the neighborhood of our Sun in the Milky Way Galaxy.
