Now, a majority of the 101 ensemble members in the ECMWF subseasonal forecast are indicating a major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event next week.
November SSWs are extremely rare: over the last 67 years, there is only one known event (Nov 1968).

Literally this. I'm still under 3k and it's already getting close to my line of overwhelm. I notice people expecting SWs to interact with them FOR FREE and pouting if we don't. This is totally unacceptable, especially when men are directing it at SSWs and BIPOC SWs. Like get with the fkn program.

We summarise the evolution of this double-SSW winter — a relatively rare event, having occurred around once per decade. The two SSWs, which were both displacements, occurred on 16 January and 4 March 2024. The evolution and strength of both were unusual relative to previous SSWs.

On the topic of Sudden Stratospheric Warmings, a recent paper seems to link Arctic amplification with a dampening of the downward influence of SSWs (i.e. milder surface temperatures compared to previous outbreaks). More SSWs ≠ a cooling influence on winter weather in mid-lats.

However, that's an absolutely tiny reversal and not really in the same ballpark as other "major" SSWs.
Furthermore, choosing hourly (rather than 6-hourly) input data makes the daily-mean reversal even smaller: only –0.02 m/s!
As such, this SSW is unlikely to be present in all reanalyses.

SSWs don't ask for tips to spend frivolously - like the name says, it's vital to their survival. Tip Zale if you can, they really deserve it and have plenty to offer if you are interested.
