#ST131
Published. A fantastic side study by @izziepotterill.bsky.social showing emergence of a new sub-clone of E. coli ST131 driven by de novo mutation of the capsule region resulting in a unique capsule operon architecture.

Many thanks to ASM for excellent experience

Genomic rearrangement of the capsule operon in a phylogenetically distinct cluster of the multi-drug-resistant Escherichia coli lineage ST131 | mSphere
Multi-drug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli is a problematic cause of invasive disease in humans and animals. Resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics is severely limiting treatment options. ST131-C is a highly successful, MDR clone of E. coli that is a major cause of extraintestinal infections. Capsule is a key virulence factor in contributing to this clone's success, with capsule switching allowing the bacteria flexibility to thrive in different niches. We present evidence that suggests continual evolution of this proliferant clone influenced by host-pathogen interaction. Small genetic changes can define the success of a clone; therefore, it is important to monitor this continual evolution in pathogens.

Using whole-genome sequencing, we found that strains were frequently shared between nearby households. Common lineages in circulation were similar to those identified previously in urban settings, including in hospitals (ST131, ST38).

They tested for ESBL-E. coli in 699 FRESH faeces samples (kudos for the commitment) from Kelp gulls, Franklin's gulls, and Peruvian pelicans.

#WGS on 85 isolates revealed 41 distinct clones, including ST131, ST10, and ST58.

Lilly Cummins investigates genomic relics of bacterial warfare in commensal E. coli. Prevalence of 234 ST131 core alleles were quantified pre-1999 and post-2015 (pandemic period). 40% of alleles were shown to be absent pre-2000. #BacterialWarfare #Genomics

some people can carry high levels of multidrug-resistant E. coli ST131 for months without any symptoms, unknowingly transmitting it to family members. This finding is crucial & it highlights that the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is not limited to 🏥 but also occurs within the community

"Old" resistance genes became more prevalent in ST131 post 2014 compared to pre 2000. Likely linked with F type plasmids and gene cassettes. #EastMidsAMR

Why is ST131 so successful? Using pangeome analysis and tracking alleles, identifying a significant increase in core and accessory allelic similarity in phylogroup B2 between pre 2000 and post 2014 datasets. #EastMidsAMR

Thats cool! Would be great to get plasmid/MGE-free, non-MDR ST131 to test this, although I assume they're quite rare
