@misokatsuhaumai.bsky.social finished another piece for my Diakamu STDP AU, I love how Corrin manages to remain a little bit lightheaded even when taking the form of The Nightmare

Lol I genuinely for a while thought “anti Hebbian” meant “philosophically against Hebbian plasticity“ but apparently it means an STDP curve that looks the opposite of Hebbian 😭

Key findings:

• Presynaptic NMDARs regulate transmitter release
• Postsynaptic NMDARs are required for associative strengthening
• A double dissociation in STDP governed by distinct NMDAR pools
• Postsynaptic NMDARs support long-term stabilization of dendritic spines and circuit architecture

Our most recent preprint: Presynaptically located NMDA receptors that signal non-ionotropically via JNK2 contribute to Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity, STDP. This explains the lack of frequency dependence in timing-dependent Long-Term Depression, tLTD. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Neocortical Layer-5 tLTD Relies on Non-Ionotropic Presynaptic NMDA Receptor Signaling
In the textbook view, NMDA receptors (NMDARs) act as coincidence detectors in Hebbian plasticity by fluxing Ca2+ when simultaneously depolarized and glutamate bound. Hebbian coincidence detection requ...

My main worry when it comes to credit assignment specifically is that there's a real possibility almost all of the learning mechanisms may be completely wrong. The neural computing field has been overfitting to a handful of old slice physiology concepts like LTP and STDP that may not hold up in vivo

I'd have to say the rise of predictive coding. Back in mid-2000s this was a niche idea, now it is a dominant view of how the brain works

BTSP is another big breakthrough. Not *the answer* to brain learning imo but the biggest learning rule progress since STDP

Are people still arguing that STDP solves everything? I feel like it's been years since I heard that one.
