Ribosome abundance is balanced by production and degradation. Bianco et al. discover that the hibernation factor Stm1 has a dual role in ribosome homeostasis. Stm1 promotes ribosome biogenesis during growth conditions while protecting a subset of ribosomes from degradation during starvation. Stm1 thus coordinates ribosome homeostasis across cellular compartments involved in growth control.

That's fascinating. The old switches in my STM1 were busted so I had to put new ones in. It's cool to know that I'm basically using a tank mouse in a different shell.
