One of my biggest regrets from the semester I spent in Glasgow was not buying an original painting by Charlotte Strawbridge.

I have a bunch of prints, but I was looking now and it seems very difficult to buy and get a work of hers into the US.

For anyone who’s never seen it, here’s the 5 minutes that should have ended this discussion for all time — Justice Jackson’s colloquy with counsel for the petitioners in SFFA v. UNC. (L to R, top to bottom.)

“This is an important website”

- Guy Martin

“Fred Dibnah would have loved this”

- Dick Strawbridge
Day off today. There needs to be a website dedicated to "Middle Aged Men Days Out", like they have for "Family Days Out". I'd like a central list of:
-Museums with big engines/ vehicles.
-Hardware/gadget shops where you can still browse.
-Good walks with notable historical POIs.

Should I make one?

Read More Written by Jenna Strawbridge (Librarian for Nicholas School of the Environment & Chemistry) and Arianne Hartsell-Gundy (Head, Arts and Humanities and Librarian for Literature) with input from Abigail Wickes (Head, Electronic Resources Access & Discovery) and Zhaneille Green (E-Access Librarian). How many times have you been down a research rabbit hole in Google Scholar, deep in a web of citations, only to have your flow disrupted by having to hunt down full-text PDFs? Or maybe you’ve found an enticing ebook you’d like to read, but can’t figure out how to actually read it? Meet LibKey Nomad, a tool paid for by Duke University Libraries that gives you quick, one-click access to content from our collections. LibKey Nomad adds buttons to your browser that help you quickly find PDFs and other full-text access options. What is LibKey Nomad? LibKey Nomad is a browser extension that works with Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, Vivaldi, and Brave browsers. It provides one-click access to full text available through Duke Libraries while you browse on a desktop or laptop. It is not currently compatible with mobile or tablet browsers. To use LibKey Nomad on your computer, download LibKey Nomad and select your browser. After installing it in your browser, select Duke University from the organization drop-down menu. There are no user accounts to create, and it will not ask for or store your institutional user credentials. How does LibKey Nomad work? When you visit a scholarly article page, LibKey Nomad checks the article’s DOI against Duke Libraries’ holdings. It then shows whether you can download the PDF, read the article online, or request it through interlibrary loan. It also checks for other access options, such as an open-access journal, an open-access article in a subscription journal, or an accepted manuscript available in a repository. Where does LibKey Nomad work? LibKey Nomad works with over 35,000 journals, 5,000 scholarly publishers, and major database platforms, such as Web of Science, ProQuest, EBSCO, Scopus, and PubMed. You can see a list of major publishers and supported platforms here. Web browsing In Wikipedia, LibKey Nomad identifies research articles in the references and links to full text available through Duke Libraries. In Google Books, LibKey Nomad shows whether Duke Libraries provides access to the ebook. Databases and journals In PubMed, LibKey Nomad adds a one-click link to the article’s available full text. On a publisher’s article page, LibKey Nomad shows the fastest available route to the PDF or full text. Help! The LibKey Nomad label keeps changing. Because LibKey Nomad may find several access options, the label on its button can vary. Here’s what some common labels mean: Download PDF: Opens a PDF from the publisher. You may need to sign in with your Duke NetID and password. Article Link: Takes you to the article page, where you may be able to read the full text in HTML or select a PDF option. Access Options: Shows other ways to get the content. For example, if Duke Libraries owns the item only in print, you may be directed to the catalog. You may also see a link to request it through interlibrary loan. tl;dr — Ready to spend less time hunting for PDFs? Download LibKey Nomad and select Duke University when prompted. Stay tuned for more blog posts featuring additional e-resource access tips for when you’re on and off campus. Why does lithium work against bipolar disorder?
In modern times we tend to think of lithium as powering smartphones and cars, yet its historical fame comes from its role as a mood stabilizer. Lithium was first used as a treatment for bipolar disorder in 1949. Yet despite decades of research and drug development, this simple medication remains the gold standard for treating one of the most complex psychiatric conditions. But why? According to Becci Strawbridge, a senior lecturer in psychological medicine at King's College London, lithium's simplicity could be what helps it cut through the complexity of bipolar disorder, a lifelong disorder that affects about 36 million people worldwide. Clinically, bipolar disorder is defined as a mood disorder characterized by specific, lasting changes to a person's mood and energy levels. Depending on the type of bipolar disorder, individuals can experience manic, hypomanic and depressive episodes — either individually, or in sequence. However, "experiencing mania itself is sufficient to have a diagnosis of bipolar [disorder]," said Dr. David Cousins, a clinical senior lecturer and honorary consultant psychiatrist at Newcastle University in the U.K. "It's probably easiest to think of that as the opposite of depression — people become elevated in mood, extremely energized, driven, motivated, and engage in...

I want to go to Wanamaker’s; also Strawbridge & Clothier. I want to go to The Gallery and pretend I’m in Logan’s Run. I want to go to Bookbinder’s and have snapper soup for dinner, or to the Venture Inn for Chicken Livermore.

Why must things change?
Oh—almost forgot to mention:

Philadelphia, I am in you.

I wonder why Strawbridge Studios decided the only white kid should be the one with an American flag background?

Maybe it's related to their CEO and owner being an active, registered republican in Durham, NC. After all, republicans seem to love shredded flags and homogenous caucasity.

Sorry for your experience in the Men's dept! We loved the Jenkintown Strawbridge & Clothier for every season and occasion, and for the restaurant on the top floor.

I worked at Strawbridge & Clothier in suburban Philadelphia 40 years ago in the dress department. One day my manager asked if I would cover Men's Fragrances for a sick coworker. I lasted 10 minutes before I was nauseous with a blinding headache & couldn't finish the shift.
