Everything is better with googly eyes and that includes snails. Today’s #AtoZ is S for Strombus (Strombidae), marine snails with lens-bearing eyes, excellent vision and quite the dashing personality. (1/8)

You're gazing into the baby blues of a conch, a medium to large sea snail. I THINK this species is a Queen conch (Aliger gigas), common in the Caribbean.

The true conchs (Family Strombidae) have camera-type eyes with hemispherical lenses, some of the most complex eyes in gastropods.

Strombidae isn’t the only family of snails with eyes on stalks. There’s a whole related group of googly eyed sea snails! This is Terebellum (Seraphsidae). There are others. (4/8)

Harpago (Harpago arthriticus) is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Strombidae, the true conchs. Found around Indian Ocean Kenya, Madagascar, the Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Réunion, the Seychelles and Tanzania; in the Pacific Ocean along the Philippines.

🐚🌴 During my first trip to the Caribbean in 2007, I still remember the excitement I felt when I found my first seashells on the beach. I was amazed and fascinated by their diversity. ✈️☀️
#Lobatus raninus has a small #shell, from 5 to 10 cm, from the #Strombidae family.

The operculum is based on protein and is sometimes flexible. This Charonia (Charoniidae) has a protein operculum.

So does this Strombus (Strombidae) - that serrated leaf-like structure on the left. I'll talk about strombs at some time. They're strange! (3/8)

They belong to family Volutidae, which includes some vividly patterned shells. Melo and Cymbiola are tucked away in their own little group. They are found in SE Asia and Australia. (2/8)

A very big snail on a pale, sandy sea floor. The shell has rolled over, almost certainly toppling because of the snail's action. The animal is black and leathery and is wrapped around a spider shell (a type of stromb, fam Strombidae). The Melo is part way through eating the stromb. The tube tucked inside the curved Melo shell is the siphon. This is crawling across a sea floor covered in lots of shell fragments and is heading just to the right of the camera. The shell is rounded and dark with vague, over-lapping triangle markings. The siphon is projecting straight out and combined with the bulky body and foot, the whole animal looks like an Art Nouveau tank trundling across the sand. The markings are white blotches on a orange-brown background.
