For his PhD, Simon Beurel (see above) studied fossil flower inclusions in 15-million-year-old amber from #China. Using X-ray imaging, he identified two previously unknown species of the tree genus 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮. 🌳 (2/3)

#Burseraceae are described as both stipulate & exstipulate (without stipules). It’s unusual for a family to have both conditions. Neotropical species are exstipulate, but the stipules on this Asian Canarium odontophyllum are unmissable (📷: nicotiana CCBYNC4), #stipule #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

It seems more likely that they sometimes act as scavengers, eating fresh kills abandoned by larger predators, but if I happen to be on Borneo anytime soon, I'll be sure to bring a gift of Canarium seeds, their normal diet.

Being floofy doesn't *necessarily* mean they aren't hardened killers.
Tufted ground squirrel: The Borneo rodent once believed to disembowel deer and feast on their organs
The forests of Borneo are home to squirrels with extravagant tails and teeth so sharp they could slash a deer's throat — and folklore has it that's exactly what they use them for.

3D models of fossil flowers help reconstruct past ecosystems. Such findings provide analogues to better understand how tropical biomes may respond to ongoing #climatechange. 🌏

Simon’s doctoral research was awarded the museum’s von Pawel-Rammingen Doctoral Thesis Award! 🏆 (3/3)

Pope Dog and his inquisitors only want what's good for your soul. As long as you're faithful to the Magisterium Canarium, you have nothing to fear.

Mango and Chinese olives cut up and put in a spicy sauce.

I’d equate this to the fruit carts in the Southern US where they bag up fruit and throw salt and tajin in and mix it all up.

Good shit.

I bought/ordered 3 books of poetry (in-person and online) the other day, and Canarium threw in a free one! I won’t read them until I finish Werner Herzog’s memoir. Trying to keep the poetry momentum going.
