#SWENG
....so I guess I gotta try making a game or something, my dreams said so. chatting with @thedeepedge.bsky.social i was lamenting there's no way for me to show off my SwEng skills.... okay but this would be a way to do that.......

and it's even worse if you're not in an 'engineering' role where the big corp decides you don't need real sweng tools.

SwEng education in the LLM age has lots of interesting unanswered questions. But a few skills like reasoning about larger systems, structuring code well and communicating about code to others don’t seem to come easily as a by-product of vibe coding whereas it did for handwriting code.

I hate it but it has taken over sweng. It's basically mandated and if it's not you have to compete with AI devs who can churn out piles of shiny code in any language that mgmt is amazed by. So I've given up, I use it now, I've lost my main passion, but I won't say it's good

i’m not encouraged by the roles they’re hiring for. dozen sweng and 0 security people sorta thing.

im sure its fine but i wouldnt use the version they host.

Yes. At least at my tech co (same industry Tom seems to be in), about a quarter of software engineers have no adjective, a quarter have "senior", a quarter have "senior II", and the rest are above that. Plain "senior" is less senior to the median sweng. "Senior" is pretty solidly mid-level here.

Same in SWEng. Designing, coding, and debugging are fun puzzles, but LLMs turns us into managers directing multiple agents, deciding what we have to review in depth and what we can skim. The puzzle is now how to divide the task across agents, and how to keep my voice in the code. Not as fun.

the only thing worthy of pride in sweng is a red diff

i have a blogpost idea about a sweng opinion i hold VERY strongly but... should there really be another post on the web about sweng practices?
July 28, 2026 at 2:50 AM
i am the worst sweng i know so like if i can do this i’m sure literally anyone can
have fun i guess? jeeboard is quite mediocre but like there's probably something here steady-company.surge.sh

And, like, folks seem weirdly far more cool with that when talking about Claude Code than they do when talking about using LLMs to generate essays or images or music or whatever. The concern is all about the quality of code or threat to SWEng jobs or burnout - all valid, but ethics weirdly absent.

trying to stand one up for my scout troop and it was being very annoying

i have it running now and am fiddling with site content

i dont looooove that the prose is all just in the database rather than VCSd but im the only sweng in the troop so maybe this is good actually

I can answer the “engineering genius” question: No, he is not. He was above-average in a time when SWEng was a much smaller and a not highly-contested field. By today’s standards he is below average & would struggle to hold down a programming job.

"We [...] must become more self-reliant as an engineering culture to build for the future. We must increase the value we ship to players while decreasing the time it takes to do so"

Yep that's the keywords for genAI sweng right there ask me how i know

Setting aside that the xitter post was probably a joke

In hindsight, maybe the conceptualization of junior devs as code monkeys was always a mistake, like what does that phase of sweng actually teach people? People don't usually get promoted out of junior for getting good at self-contained tasks
i’ve worked in tech more than 20 years. it has never been more ridiculous.

Yoooo, you're majoring in software eng? That's sick. Best of luck from a fellow sweng lifer 🫡

📣 New Podcast!
#HormigasAgilistas #Agile #Agilidad #IA #AI #SDD #SpecDrivenDevelopment #IngenieriaDelSofware #SwEng

tbh i have the same position as he does on ai, for experienced sweng it's more or less "fine" but for anything else it's kind of really inauthentic and should be avoided
April 7, 2026 at 9:00 PM
as someone who is a SWeng by trade and got laid off due to AI and is watching all of these people succeed while I go almost a whole year finding no job I cannot tell you how much rage it fills me with to watch this tire fire continue

In an online debate about what sweng tactic is best, one is writing personal blogging software in Python, the other is writing embedded C that manipulates the control rods in a nuclear reactor. Neither mentions the project they are talking about.
