#SXM5
so when the fuck do we start getting cheap used datacenter shit dumped on the market. i want my computer to be a horrible pile of E1.S L ruler SSDs and SXM5 GPU compute modules adapted to fit consumer interfaces with parts from shenzhen/taiwan

I Excel'd the power cons of Google's deal with Elon Musk's fossil-fuelled data centre. Took me ~10 seconds

Claude returned a similar answer, but consumed as much energy as **fully discharging** two smartphones, to do it

This is why the shift to reliance on LLMs bloats energy consumption so badly

Your fine-tune fits on one 80GB card, so renting eight is money you do not need to spend.

A single H100 SXM5 comes with 14 vCPUs and 122 GiB of RAM, launches in minutes, and runs $2.89 an hour.

NVIDIA H100 SXM5 GPU Use Cases on Massed Compute - Massed Compute
Launch 1x or 8x NVIDIA H100 SXM5 on Massed Compute for 70B-class serve, long context, and NVLink train. 1x is $2.89/hr as of 16 September 2026.

It reminds me of the H100 SXM5 modules, they are also incredibly dense, maybe even more so than 5090 FE.

Your 70B model will not fit on one 80GB card, and splitting it across slow links drags every step.

An 8x H100 SXM5 node holds 640GB of HBM3 with all eight cards on NVLink mesh at 900 GB/s, room for a 70B model in BF16. $25.12 an hour.

3-400W feels low. H100 TDP on SXM5 is like 700W. Assume you're aiming for about 70% utilization and you're talking closer to 500W. Also, frontier models are spreading out layers across more than one GPU. I would suspect that the instantaneous usage is more like 4kW.

...for like 0.3-0.6Wh per

I wonder if that's already SXM6, aka Blackwell (B100/B200).
Not in that industry anymore, but I haven't seen the SXM5/H100 modules with a "portrait" layout before.

That might be why they were ✨ extra spicy ✨ around this topic 😆

Okay my favorite part of all this from a hardware standpoint is each new generation ***isn't backwards compatible*** they're not shipping pcie datacenter racks, they're shipping sxm5 which isn't compatible with sxm2/3/4 etc.

They're LOCKED in.

The H100 GPU starts at L2 Cache and gets around a lot of the bottlenecks using extremely wide data buses, etc.

But you really don't want to be moving training data between cards all the time.

8x H100 SXM5 nodes are available now. 640GB of HBM3 with all eight cards on NVLink mesh at 900 GB/s, which holds a 70B model in BF16 with room for long context. $25.12 an hour for the node.

Little's Law says keep bytes in flight; the H100 disagrees past a point. Clean-room microbenchmarks on three H100 SXM5 dies find plain-load bandwidth peaks at ~2 loads per thread and falls about 35% by 8, reproducing at -35.0% and -35.2%. cp.async holds 2.1-2.9x at high depth.

Oh, it does say that. I read 350W PCIe and thought it didn’t include the SXM5 variant.
