Have you played Koudelka? Or even heard of it?

Koudelka is a survival horror RPG for the PlayStation 1, developed by Sacnoth and released in NA in 2000. The game is an interesting mix of Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill. It’s cinematic with lots of CGI cutscenes!

A late 1999 two-page ad from Japan for Koudelka, an RPG by Sacnoth for the Sony PlayStation

Hiroki Kikuta, a former composer at Square, founded Sacnoth to pave the way for the development of Koudelka's horror-filled quest that took place in 1898 within the walls of the mysterious Nemeton Monastery.

Have you played Koudelka? 👹😱

It's a survival horror RPG for the PlayStation 1, developed by Sacnoth and released in NA in 2000. It's cinematic with lots of CGI cut scenes! And a precursor to the great Shadow Hearts series.

Shadow Hearts. Released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2, it was a followup to Koudelka on the PS1 from Sacnoth (later called Nautilus), a short-lived company founded by Hiroki Kikuta.

It's a gothic horror themed RPG set in the early 1900s in Europe.

55) Lord Dunsany is still the OG.

No, you don't need to read "The Fortress Unvanquishable Save for Sacnoth." But your Sword & Sorcery education is not complete unless you have read it.

i have been saying the title “the fortress unvanquishable, save for sacnoth” so many times this month that it has lost all meaning to me

The best fictional weapon? For my money it's Sacnoth. Forged from the spine of a metal croc-dragon and sharpened on its eyeball. From arguably the first sword & sorcery story The Fortress Unvanquishable Save for Sacnoth by Lord Dunsany

Any Koudelka and Shadow Hearts fans out there traversing Blue Skies?

Poor Sacnoth. After developing a string of cult classics from 1999 onward, they'd be gobbled up by Aruze, renamed Nautilius, and then shifted out of the games industry altogether in 2007.

A bit odd that in my attempt to take a break from Side-Scrollers, I just end up playing a pair of Cinematic RPGs back-to-back.

Heads up for anyone who might be interested.
There's a guillotine in Koudelka.

Lord Dunsany sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/dunsan... died on this day, so here's some related artwork (Artist: Ray Cruz, [couldn't identify], William F Northend and William F Northend). 3&4 for "The Fortress Unvanquishable, Save for Sacnoth" (1910 edition):

"Hey, Angel. I'm not gonna ask you to take me to heaven...
But will you pray for me at least?"
"Are you out of your mind? There's no bloody way I'm going to pray for you.
But, I guess I owe you because you saved me too."
