Likewise explaining that Sallust, whining about 'Roman decline' is writing two centuries *before* the height of Roman power and prosperity and that two centuries is a *really long time.*

'Yet there were Roman citizens obstinately determined to destroy both themselves and their country.'

"Omnia Romae venalia sunt" - Sallust, talking about Elon Musk, who misquotes Sulla.
I don't know, genuinely, whether writing about "elon musk tweeted something fucking stupid and dangerous and wrong about history" is a useful thing anymore.

#OTD 1st #Oct #Rome honoured #Fides, goddess of trust, good faith & fidelity. She appears on many Roman coins — including some on display at our museum in Melrose. 🔎🪙

It's also the birthday of Roman historian Sallust c.86 BC. His accounts of the Catiline conspiracy & Jugurthine War survive.

I have to admit this particular political moment has made me somewhat more ready to trust Sallust and Cicero in their characterization of the Catilinarian conspiracy.

"the senator was bribed by Egyptian gold" is a scandal that Sallust could have written about

55. Sallust is the best Latin historian because he’s the most Thucydidean. My wife will kill me for this opinion.

"The nobles abused their victory to gratify their passions; they put many men out of the way by sword or banishment ...It's this spirit which has commonly ruined great nations, when one party desires to triumph over another by any & every means & avenge itself ... w/excess cruelty"––Sallust, Jug. 42

Dazu ein paar kluge Worte.
„Durch Eintracht wachsen selbst kleine Dinge, durch Zwietracht zerfallen die größten.“

Cicero wrote his treatise On Friendship (among others) soon after Caesar's assassination in 44, Sallust wrote his Catiline's War in 43-42, and Vergil began his Eclogues (featuring homoerotic shepherd rap battles and rainbow colored sheep) in 42, all while the Republic was crumbling. Art never stops.

Not 100% confirmed yet, but it looks like I’ll finally be teaching my favorite Latin author in the fall, Sallust! Inconcinnitas? More like inconcinni-yassss.

New teacher moment unlocked, receiving student requests to join my upper level language class. Slowly developing my cult to Sallust and Greek and Roman Historiography.

🦛 A Roman hippopotamus in Copenhagen's Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek.

⛲️ Originally part of a fountain whereby water sprang from its mouth, this rosso antico marble hippo may have originated in the Gardens of Sallust (Horti Sallustiani) in Rome.

You know, we read like Cicero and Tacitus and Sallust to understand Rome now, but do you think at the time they were like "Wow, just caught Gaius Brookius discussing current events down at the forum. Very insightful, he says this civil war situation is Complicated, and somebody oughta do something."
