EE friends, what's your favorite family of high-speed high-pin-count (> 100) board-to-board mezzanine connectors? Ideally without the samtec tax.
I would love to use samtec connectors but the 15+ USD per connector is hard to justify, even if they are *really* nice

one neat thing about the future is looking up the physical mailing addresses for old infomercial companies and seeing what's there now. i wonder if Samtec Microelectronics employees know they work on hallowed Night Beat ground

Ya know, I don't know why, but I expected samtec cable assemblies to have better inter-lane length matching and inter-pair skew matching :v

Apparently back when I made my samtec HSEC8-140-01-L-PV-4-1-WT footprint I choose violence, because for whatever reason that part lags the hell out of the KiCad PCB editor (in stable *and* nightly), and it just compounds the more you have
But it's fine in the footprint editor????

I was very *very* close to going off topic on stream and just browsing the samtec catalog live, but we managed to not do that! So that's a win I guess :v

Replaced the samtec HSEC8-140-01-L-PV-4-1-WT's with PCIe x8 connectors,
Sure we get kneecapped on current, only 1/26th of what the samtec parts can supply, but we can still get 55W per slot, So that's 1.7kW per chassis total, which is fine.
Also the PCIe connectors are so much cheaper :v

Did you know about biblically accurate HDMI?
It has 29 pins and 6 data channels instead of 4. Samtec seems to be the only ones who make this Type B connector and I have no idea who actively uses this.
It was intended for dual-link operation but I'm not aware anything ever adopted this.

I really would like to use a samtec SEARAY, but they're just, expensive, and i'm thinking about cost reduction, I guess it would depend if doubling the number of mezzanine connectors would be cheaper or more expensive, than using a comparable samtec.

I find it surprising that I can't find any decently cheap SMD mount mezzanine arrays, the only ones that keep showing up are the samtec SEARAYs and they're like 11 bucks a pop, ugh.

Yeah, this is not so much for a SOM, but I was also thinking about eventually designing my own SOM :v
I would *love* to find something cheaper but equivalent to the samtec SEARAYs, they're basically *exactly* what I need, but ouch, that samtec tax.
