#SarsenCountry
Spending a very happy day in #SarsenCountry visiting @bucksarchives.bsky.social, frantically scouring the parish registers database before the Big Move. Enjoying a quick bite and #TeaUp in the museum garden!

Well hello everyone, welcome to #SarsenCountry and archaeological witterings about rocks. Here’s the sort of thing I mean. I also spend a lot of time looking at aerial photos and lidar in GIS. I’m interested in landscape archaeology, industry in rural contexts and prehistoric ideas about materials.🏺

So close. We are in #SarsenCountry, my school country, we competed against teams on muddy sports pitches at schools all round here. 23/

And let's not forget to invite our #geology friends to join the trip!

Come visit #SarsenCountry, pick up your Rover Railcard, check out the thread so far and look out for our next destinations.

@geolsoc @GeoOutreach @pavementgeology @GeolAssoc
Let's take a service from Paddington and head west into #SarsenCountry.

Did you know there is as much, if not more, #sarsen="/hashtag/sarsen" class="hover:underline text-blue-600 dark:text-sky-400 no-card-link">#sarsen stone in our streets as in prehistoric monuments? The area around @StPaulsLondon used to be paved with it.

Maybe you are closer to #sarsen than you think!

Welcome to #SarsenCountry - It's Quicker By Rail!

[inspired by @railwaymuseum @alisonatkin @DrHComics @johnswogger]

The poster will be on display for #SAGESPGR18 10/11 May, Sorby Room (Archaeology) @UniRdg_Arch @UniRdg_GES, come check it out @UniRdg_PhD @UniofReading!

There is so much to see in #SarsenCountrytag/SarsenCountry" class="hover:underline text-blue-600 dark:text-sky-400 no-card-link">#SarsenCountry!

I think you'll agree, it's time for a new guidebook. Flex your Rover ticket and explore: the whole poster will be out tomorrow so you can choose where to visit first.

Your guide to #SarsenCountry includes a short history of how antiquarians and archaeologists have written about the stone. Here is a little tantalising extract.

Don't forget to collect your guide with your Rail Rover - sarsens aren't mapped by @BritGeoSurvey so you'll need it!

Further along the coast of #SarsenCountry, ships pass in the night.

While at Bournemouth, look out from the cliffs of #SarsenCountry over the grey seas of the English Channel. What surprises might you see!
November 18, 2024 at 1:41 PM
It's time to take the Bournemouth Belle to #SarsenCountry

Next time you promenade through the Town Gardens, look closely at the rockeries. In amongst them are #sarsen stones from 100km away.

It's not just wealthy Georgian noblemen who used #sarsens in landscape garden design!

Let's return to #Kent and visit @EnglishHeritage St Augustine's Abbey #Canterbury

This is the strangest place in #SarsenCountry.

Two large #sarsens, one carefully carved, had been used in the foundations of the tenth century church. What had they been before they were hardcore?

It's time to flex our Rail Rover passes to head a bit further westward into #SarsenCountry

You may know @AveburyNT with its huge henge monument and circles of #sarsen stones. But if you venture further afield you can explore the 'sarsen villages' that skirt the chalk Downs.
November 18, 2024 at 1:08 PM
While we're here, let's stop off in the Vale of the White Horse #SarsenCountry

Climb up onto the chalk Downland for #WaylandsSmithy chambered tomb @EnglishHeritage or follow the lanes around villages like Idstone, Ashbury and Letcombe to see #sarsen stones used in the buildings.

We'll be heading back into #Kent later on during the tour.

But #SarsenCountry is served by all of the Big Four railway companies. Over the next few days we'll travel to and fro across southern England, looking for #sarsen stone. Some of it is in some unexpected places!
November 18, 2024 at 12:38 PM
Let's start on Southern electric rails and head out east into Kent.

Did you know that there are #sarsen stones in Faversham and Canterbury? We'll find out more about them later on during the trip.

It's time to begin our tour of #SarsenCountry

Pack a picnic and tea flask, pick up your Rail Rover ticket, and join everyone on Platform 1 for the next departure!

Tomorrow evening, more about where we are going...

My #map is a railway poster. It will get its first outing at the School of Archaeology, Geography, and Environmental Science post-grad conference in May.

In particular I've been inspired by a fabulous poster designed by Arthur Watts for the London, Midland, and Scottish Railway Company in 1935. It advertises rail travel around the Lake District (sorry, I can't find a scan of it online @railwaymuseum) #SarsenCountry

I aspire to make a conference poster that has no words on it.

For me, the best posters ever are railway posters. Wonderful graphic art. Brilliant, beautiful, advertising. So elegant.

Take a moment to think - what are the best posters you've ever seen?
