While it looks like a miniature alien tank, this creature is actually a terrestrial crustacean, making it more closely related to crabs and lobsters than to insects. It sports exactly 14 legs. In this photo, they’re working overtime to navigate what looks like a treacherous mountain range (actually just some textured rock or dirt). Philoscia muscorum is sometimes called the "fast woodlouse" because it's significantly more active and quick than its "roly-poly" cousins that just curl into balls when they're nervous. Despite living on land, they still breathe through modified gills. This is why you always find them in damp places like under logs or rocks—they literally need moisture to breathe. They are nature's tiny trash compactors, spending their lives munching on decaying leaves and organic debris.
