#SaveNASAScience
@planetarysociety.bsky.social had a #saveNASAscience thing at Congress. There's a FY 2027 budget hearing with NASA's Admin where NASA Science is discussed. No mention/coverage by Planetary Society. One day sugar-high events fade fast. Day-to-day efforts where rubber hits the road aren't of interest.

What a fantastic Day of Action! 130 Planetary Society members came from 34 states and held over 200 meetings in Congress to #SaveNASAScience from the draconian cuts proposed in FY 2027. Between the two of us, Bill Nye and I did 13 TV interviews, from 6am to 6pm, local to national stations.

Ready for training for the @planetarysociety.bsky.social Day of Action to #SaveNASAScience. See you on Capitol Hill tomorrow!

The proposed NASA budget is lazy, unpopular, and destructive. They literally copy-pasted the one from last year and even forgot to update the year in places. We convinced Congress to push back last year (see me in the back?). We'll do it again this year to #saveNASAscience.

If the experts who process climate data, innovate in satellite technology and monitor our Earth are treated as disposable, is "Saving NASA" just a political talking point?

How can we claim to value the science while abandoning the very people who make it possible?

a thread: 🧵 #SaveNASAScience

Despite the talk, "Reductions in Force" (RIFs) haven't officially hit #NASA.

Instead, the agency relied on voluntary retirements with severance for civil servants. Official RIFs have strict rules and bring the kind of bad publicity leadership wants to avoid.

The NY Times and other news outlets reported that GSFC decreased its workforce by 11%.

This figure is misleading; the actual reduction was significantly higher. Here are at least two reasons why:

We are mere hours away from the House of Representatives voting to advance a bipartisan funding deal that funds NASA and NSF. The bill protects just about everything #SaveNASAScience has been fighting for.

Watch Bill Nye and me "take over" the latest episode of StarTalk Radio, now on YouTube. We're talking, of course, about the need to #SaveNASAScience from the extreme budget cuts in FY 2026:

@planetarysociety.bsky.social

The Planetary Society (originally founded by Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray, and Louis Friedman) met with Congress to defend funding for NASA science projects and missions.

This should be seen and appreciated.

I’m in D.C. with @planetarysociety.bsky.social to #SaveNASAScience

The proposed 2026 budget cuts 47% of NASA science, 100% of STEM ed, & 56% of NSF. These cuts would gut U.S. space leadership. NASA science drives innovation, inspires generations, and reminds us what’s possible when we look up.
