Preinstalled antivirus like McAfee or Norton is just a scareware shakedown racket. Windows Defender works just fine and you don't need anything else. The first task on new machines is remove the scareware/crapware preinstalled by the vendor without consent.

PSA the best time to get secure remote access software set up on your loved one’s computer is BEFORE they encounter the latest breed of scareware webpage redirect that takes over the whole screen, hides the mouse, disables the keyboard, and beeps and shouts at them to call the scammers for help.

* Added an example scareware payload targeting iOS with a victim's permission
