For a long time I thought I had a vivid memory of seeing Curry in Brimstone and Treacle, only realised recently it was actually Schmoedipus

JW Schmoedipus by Dennis Potter. It's nice that the BBC pulls one of his plays out of the archive once every ten years for us to see. This one is mostly interesting for it being a "vomit draft" precursor of Brimstone & Treacle, Den is clearly just vamping, he just has a vague idea and lets it run.

I wouldn't recommend Schmoedipus on iPlayer. Tim Curry's acting is like if Prince actually did play a horny Joker in the Batman film. That's in addition to the blatant misogyny of the script.

Good on BBC Four for bunging Schmoedipus on again in memory of Tim Curry. I'd quite forgotten how mad the modernist design of John Carson's workplace was. It's a weird play, all right.

Schmoedipus was designed by Peter Seddon, who also did the sets for one of my outstanding archive TV holy grails, the mouth-wateringly bonkers Feelifax.

Caught the beginning of Dennis Potter's 1974 TV play Schmoedipus last night on BBC4 (featuring the late Tim Curry and some model trains) and what has really stuck with me this morning is that the interstitial announcer did not know how to pronounce Schmoedipus. Shocking.

I didn't reference Schmoedipus at all in my 1989 dissertation on the theme of childhood in Dennis Potter, which seems a massive oversight now but
a) I was only 7 when it was shown and pretty sure I would not have been allowed to watch it
b) I couldn't get the script and
c) it's not been on since
