Without question, In Ascension by Martin MacInnes is one of the most beautifully written science fiction novels I've read in my life. His sentences are as lush and full as the worlds he describes. My god, what a talent.

Like Bullet Ballet and his later Kotoko, Vital is built with all the idiosyncratic and volatile stylings of Tsukamoto’s science fiction and horror, but all for the benefit of a drowning immersion in incredibly soft-spoken and haunting heartbreak and mourning. The empathy baked in is gutting.

This is a thing that goes beyond this series that I hate: criticizing science-fiction/fantasy/horror or any genre for deigning to have genre elements. This movie has a whale court…because they’re intelligent creatures that live in this world. It’s sci-fi. What’s the issue here?

As Heinlein said, the perfect science fiction sentence is "the door dilated". You can imagine what's happening, and that's enough. Only explain as much as absolutely necessary for the plot. Don't elaborate on how devices work, that the characters understand *in character* is sufficient.

Trying to think of why anyone would troll your fiction, all I get is some might complain the science isn't real. Duh, not hard sci-fi. Also? Any sci-fi where humans travel to the stars doesn't align with known science so it's all fantasy on some level.
