Styled in an 1800's naturalist theme, titled "Figure 2. Scorpiones". I think it was surprising to me how many people were happy to learn that Scorpions are just another type of Arachnid, along with spiders, horseshoe crabs, mites, and ticks.

I am hereby petitioning to rename New York from the Empire State to the Sea Scorpion State.

Here is a "sea scorpion" or the Eurypterid Eurypterus remipes. This specimen comes from the Upper Silurian Fiddler Green Formation in Herkimer Co, New York. This happen to be the state fossil of New York. Some such as the Pterygotids could reach enormous sizes!

Beyond spiders and scorpions, Chelicerates are arthropod animals belonging to the subphylum Chelicerata. They are mainly characterized by having "chelicerae," which are the first pair of appendix near the mouth that can be shaped like a stinger or a chelae (similar to crab pincers).
