i particularly love the bemoaning of "xmas", an abbreviation that originates in medieval christian scribal tradition
“What is the crime? Enjoying a wokeless Christmas? A succulent wokeless Christmas?” screams Keith as the Woke Police cart him away in their low emission electric paddy wagon for saying the word “Christmas”.

Bastard anglicana remains the funniest possible name for a widely used scribal hand.

Also, scrawlings of an Iron Age civilization that had entire scribal schools in conscious imitation of best writing practices in known world.

Kingdom of Judaea wasn't a great power, but not exactly bumfuckisville.

Heard "scribal error" pronounced as "scribble error" and you know what, fair

Wanna know something cool?

This scroll of the Book of Esther was scribed by a 14 year-old named Luna Ambron in 1767 in Rome--

and it's one of the very few pieces of the sacred scribal arts that we *know* to have been scribed by a girl/woman before the 21st c. (Scribes don't sign their work sooo.)

Optimist: The cup is half full

Pessimist: The cup is half empty

Palaeographer: The cup is a scribal error for tuþ
Optimist: The cup is half full

Pessimist: The cup is half empty

Historian: The cup can teach you a lot of things that you do not want to know
Optimist: The cup is half full

Pessimist: The cup is half empty

Science Fiction Writer: The cup is a crystalline super computer and the liquid is hyperintelligent, they want to know why humanity should be allowed to exist, you have 30 minutes to respond and the answer must be danced by a cat

If the 'Odyssey' was historically accurate to the Bronze Age Aegean, Ithaka would have a whole department of scribal accountants doing bookkeeping on clay tablets in Linear B.

I have to say, the Torah is quite an impressive bit of literature once you actually delve into the details. The mode of transmission from oral stories into written texts continually edited by scribal communities makes for an immense lot of puns and impressive internal references.

Visual media imitating other media is fascinating. I once found a manuscript where the scribe imitated embroidered text that was itself an imitation of scribal calligraphy.
These fragments from a Roman villa in Spain are not from a mosaic but from a fresco. If you look closely you’ll see a grid of lines, many following the contour of the figures, much as tesserae do on mosaics. This trompe-l’oeil technique simulates mosaics. 1/ 🏺

Scrivener is another word for a scribe.

(Old French escrivre, but I'll leave that second).

Creating a new, retrospective order that reaches back six years is not a scribal correction. It's utter BS.

a more complex issue than people think

1. lectio difficilior is a basic, if not somewhat flawed, principle that when there are manuscript variants, the more difficult or strange option is to be preferred because it is unlikely that copying error or scribal intervention would produce something weird

Scribal tippex.
One fascinating discovery has been the use of a white, paint-like substance used by the scribes to make corrections – centuries before corrective fluids made their way onto our desks. 🧵

Guys guys guys it's whales and there's a very amusing scribal error at the heart of it all, but everyone proposing sea lions is very lovely :)
Not sure if I'm understanding this correctly but... sea leopards? Is thing? Or is it just that there are creatures who move through the sea [and] leopards... @acbm.bsky.social ??

(I want sea leopards to be a thing though...)
