Manhattan, New York, U.S.A.-based organization Bloomberg Philanthropies announced a USD 260 million (EUR 229 million) commitment to expand the Bloomberg Ocean Initiative during the Earthshot Prize Impact Assembly in London, England. The Bloomberg Ocean Initiative expansion will “help close the gap between ocean protection commitments and action as countries work toward the global goal of protecting 30 percent of the ocean by 2030,” Bloomberg Philanthropies said in a release. The added investment is targeting over 50 different coral reef restoration projects in Marine Protected Areas damaged by marine heatwaves, pollution, and severe storms, equaling 165,922 square kilometers across 71 countries and 99 territories. “Our new commitment marks the next phase of the Bloomberg Ocean Initiative,” Bloomberg Philanthropies CEO Patricia Harris said. “Over the years, we have made important progress in protecting our ocean, but we still have a long way to go. Among several new provisions, China’s latest five-year plan for its fisheries sector has outlined science-based approaches to conserving domestic stocks and strategies to tackle labor abuses and illegal fishing practices in its distant-water fishery operations, according to a Chinese fisheries researcher. Wang Songlin, a marine biologist and the president of the Qingdao Marine Conservation Society (QMCS), told SeafoodSource the plan limits wild catch from China’s domestic waters to a maximum of 10 million tons per year and prioritizes science-based and targeted fisheries management rather than broad aggregate controls. “Importantly, the plan calls for species- and fishery-specific catch limits, improved gear and fishing method management, and wider use of selective and resource-friendly fishing technologies,” he said. The plan also calls for a reduction in the size of the nation’s fishing fleet and includes a prohibition on catching juvenile fish for feed production. Outside of domestic waters, the plan includes strategies to tackle issues in its distant-water fleet, such as introducing broadband for the welfare of workers to alleviate labor issues. “It calls for sustainable development of new fishing grounds and resources, tighter control of fleet capacity, stronger compliance assessment and approval systems, training, and greater corporate responsibility,” he said. “It also...

A coalition of conservation groups called on Spain’s government to ensure marine protected areas (MPAs) are being safeguarded, requesting additional funding, better fisheries management, and the establishment of pending fisheries-interest marine reserves. The groups told the Spanish Secretariat‑General for Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA) that management plans for MPAs have been regularly delayed, with some already exceeding legal deadlines. According to a press release, there are 10 management plans still pending approval for marine areas within Natura 2000, a network of protected areas across the European Union. The groups further claim that MAPA needs to implement protective management measures for these areas to meet the government’s environmental commitments. “MPAs are an essential tool both for restoring marine ecosystems and for safeguarding the future of the fishing sector, especially in the context of uncertainty caused by the impacts of the climate crisis. For them to work, effective management plans are needed that include fisheries measures, which must be approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food,” the groups said in a joint statement.
