A small, crinkly, five petaled deep rose flower is dwarfed by the leaves around it. The baldhip rose is different from other wild roses because it has few thorns on its branches (although its stems have soft "prickles") , and doesn't form thickets. It is called bald hip because its hips drop their sepals.

A long shady walkway leads to one side of the community garden, looking like green light at the end of a tunnel. All the paths are lined with flower beds for the honeybees ( there are beehives near my plot). A view across the P-Patch shows plots extending across the over 2 acre lot (under 1 hectare). The patch is bounded on the south and east by the UPrep HS buildings, on the west by 25th Ave and on the north by houses built along 80th. Btw, the Seattle government says the site is plowed. No, it is not. Kildeer don't really nest here either. A bit of romantic fiction! But yes, it has tons of quack grass and comfrey. Too bad you can't compost quack grass. 😕

Kousa dogwood tree blossoms, before they enlarge and change colir, look like small four petaled crosses with strong veination running from the flower bud core to the tip of the bracts. The colors go from a rich green to a bronze red at the end. There are five blossoms in the image, scattered among the large, opposite, bronze green leaves. The colors remind me of a rich tapestry. Kousa dogwood blossoms grow at the tip of branches, and consist of four colorful (white and various pinks, depending on the cultivar) bracts surrounding a rounded cluster of small, insignificant green flowers. These ripen into an edible fruit, which is mildly sweet.

Walking in a neighborhood, I came upon a wooden fence lined with pale lavender bearded irises, and the sidewalk strip full of irises as well. The flowers are just starting to bloom, and the scent is delightful. Both the front yard and the strip have various shrubs as well. I didn't look to see what might be planted to succeed this show, but will come back to check!

A cluster of flower buds and one just open white thimbleberry flower rise above a sea of large, maple leaf shaped, leaves. The flower has five white petals and a heart full of gold stamens. The thimbleberry fruit, when it ripens, looks like a flattened deep red raspberry, and is seedy but extremely delicious. It isn't cultivated outside of home gardens because it is very fragile, best eaten immediately. A stem of hanging salal flowers casts a shadow on leathery oval serrated green leaves. Salal is evergreen. The seven or so flowers on the raceme are pink to white and strikingly glandular hairy. They are shaped like little urns hanging upside down, with five white, flaring, pointed sepals at the top. The fruit of salal is a blue black berry with a sweet flavor. Salal berries can made into preserves.

This lovely bush, a relative of madrones, kinnickkinnicks, heathers, rhododendrons, etc., is named Enkianthus campanulatus. More commonly known as redvein enkianthus, this Japanese shrub is full of light green, shiny elliptic leaves and dangling clusters of bell shaped flowers. The creamy white flowers are edged in pink and have red veins running from the petal tips to to bottom of the corolla. Here you can see a branch with several flower clusters, with a leafy background against a blue sky. A large white kousa dogwood tree grows next to a modern beige house, under a blue sky with high thin white clouds. The tree is striking in its size and the exhuberant abundance of flowers covering its rounded crown. It is growing close to a sidewalk, bordered by a well tended garden full of various shrubs and a red japanese maple tree.

A tiny, soft green urn shaped red huckleberry flower hangs below its stem on a long green peduncle. You can see a green pistil extruding from between tiny curled petals. The stem itself is dark green, with alternate small, oval bright green leaves. Further down the stem you can see a small, dark green baby huckleberry. If all goes well it will ripen to a cardinal red. If I am lucky I may get a few before the birds do. This year I almost missed the flowers because they were so green. Usually they have more pink in the corolla.

Piggyback plants have masses of heart shaped dentate leaves, that grow on long hairy stalks. The flowers grow on a long central stem, and are green and chocolate brown with 4 ribbon-like petals, 5 sepals, and 3 yellow stamens. They are tiny,less than half an inch. When you see a patch of plants, the flowers are sometimes hard to see unless you get close. They are called piggyback plants because a new plant grows at the base of a leaf, bending the leaf down to the ground, where the plantlet takes root.

A bright yellow Iceland poppy opens its wrinkled petals to reveal bright yellow stamens and a white pistil. The green lacy foliage is softly feathery. There are a few fuzzy buds coming up on equally fuzzy stems amid the leaves. Trumpet shaped, magenta Japanese azalea flowers crowd through the small, oval, shiny evergreen leaves. It is hard to see the magenta stamens and pistils. The tips are slightly darker, and a few antgers are starting to open, showing a bitvof white pollen.
