If the senate actually wanted to do permitting reform they would mandate states develop programmatic agreements, mandate minimum staffing for state & fed reviewers, & fund THPOs through the same mechanism that they fund SHPOs, and fund them both better. #archaeology #NEPA #NHPA #Section106 ⚱️🧪

I work most often with the National Historic Preservation Act #Section106 as an archaeologist, which protects both our archaeological heritage held in common and Native American tribes' rights to protect their history, culture, and sacred spaces. BAAJA explicitly cuts them out of the process.

Specifically one thing they mentioned was that a lot of senate staffers had no idea what #Section106 was or how it affects #archaeology, so whoever is running @welch.senate.gov's accounts might give this a listen and move up in the office rankings. Also #BAAJA is 417 pages long.

You may have heard in the news recently about the 5000 yr old fish geoglyph in Arizona that was destroyed by the border wall - the border wall has a national security waiver to #Section106 so they made no effort to ID or construct around it. If #BAAJA is passed that can happen anywhere in the US.
