Apparently Segedunum Roman Fort turns 1900 this year! I snapped this pic on Saturday when visiting for a fascinating talk by Nick Hodgson on the sites history from pre-Roman settlements, to the reuse of the Roman forts stones in medieval buildings around Tyneside @northeastmuseums.bsky.social

Often, when asked to replicate an ancient pot, our challenge is to copy the work of a hugely skilled craftsperson. At other times it's to not try to improve on the original. This little Roman colour coated cup from Segedunum is the latter. So simply done that I wonder if it was decorated by a child🏺

Just two hours away from our own fort site at Newstead, Segedunum is the most excavated Roman fort site in the whole of Britain. Positioned to the east of Hadrian’s Wall, it was in use for some 300 years!
