My mom once explained that she didn't pursue my autism diagnosis when my pediatrician told her he thought I had it, because it would have made it virtually impossible to insure me. She and the doctor agreed to leave any mention of it off my chart.
One of the things Democrats really need to avoid assuming is that people remember what insurance was like pre-ACA. New voters have no idea about declinable preexisting conditions, which so many of us (myself included) have.

There's no debate which is improved by the intervention of Tony Blair. This is ableism. It frames anxiety, depression and ADHD as things people just need to get on with, with no acknowledgement of how damaging that attitude is, or how hard it can be to be recognised and diagnosed in the first place.

my armchair psychological diagnosis is that the drive to accumulate as much wealth as possible eats away at the drive for self-improvement or the internal desire to cultivate any skills or tastes. these people build huge mounds of treasure and then essentially just sit around looking at it, empty.
find it genuinely delighting that people with enough money to never work again (and do literally anything they want anywhere in the world at any time) seemingly have nothing going on in their lives and are so miserable they are just spending the holidays frantically posting

AHDH isn’t really “self-diagnosis” either! A doctor typically compares your necessarily self-described symptoms to a set of known factors and makes a determination. This is just spinning “I find millennial women annoying” into a National Crisis
The most telling section is about Lindy West's difficulty getting diagnosed with ADHD. Lewis smugly declares this is "not how medical diagnoses work."
She's wrong. A wide range of medical conditions can't be diagnosed through brain scans or blood tests. Believing patients is the only option.
