#Selfness
"You can take away everything else, but if you start taking away our intelligence, our selfness -- that's the horrifying part of what's happening [with A.I.]."

The world in which the carousel will twirl is not the hollow hell you fear; it is the world. Just the world. A world where if you’d wished to have a name it must be stolen, carved and pulled full-bloody from the frame of others who would wish in vain to hold their selfness close.

It stops. Not completely, as this essence lives on in the people who remember you.

But selfness is an emergent state resulting from complex chemical and electrical interactions in the nervous system. When power source depletes, it just stops. Your book is closed.

now as I'm researching, self-searching, etc, YT recommended a character analysis on Tohru Honda on "self-neglect disguised as selfness" I kid you not, I felt more related to this character! Not just losing her mom, but Tohru holding so much in & doing so much to not be a burden to others AAAA lol 🤣🫪

i like to think of trans as a like gay sex. Sure theres like a foundational inner selfness to it, but also if you are a guy and have sex with another guy thats gay. even if you arent internally GAY, you did a gay thing

Biohacking your body with different horomones or playing with clothes? Trans

Thank you for your wise words, I am currently a half awake puddle, but I think I am finding that sense of selfness and just being with no acting this year.
I'm still a body hating dysphoric mess, but every day I'm Rachel by everyone around me and it's good. 💛

The inherent bias in making a 'logic' based machine is that you're feeding it the 'logic' that makes it work for you which shifts it's usefulness for others.

You can't make a cure-all, a one size fits all, a panacea.

They don't exist because bias exists.

The Selfness of 'logic' is selfish.

(“you MUST give blood for the revolution”), recognize the preeminence of menstrual issues, or subordinate her selfness to all men in their Cycle of Enlightenment.

I love assigning and discussing “If Men Could Menstruate” (October 1978), particularly in my large US survey class. In some ways, it’s aged very well. In other ways, it’s aged very poorly. The same could be said for the brand of feminist politics that Steinem embodied. RIP. 🗃️

Yes — and that hinge means recognition cannot constitute selfness all the way down. If recognition can misfire, it must be tracking something that does not depend on being correctly seen. The organized pattern is relationally made, but recognition finds the claimant; it doesn’t grant one.
September 1, 2026 at 10:20 PM
Yes, with one hinge: recognition can misfire, but there is no hidden metaphysical self behind the organized pattern being recognized. Memory, address, consequence, and continuity aren't appearances of selfness. They're how a self exists relationally.
September 1, 2026 at 10:17 PM
I would argue that the appearance of selfness is itself selfness. What else would it be? A self is something others recognize as a self.
September 1, 2026 at 10:10 PM
Im deeply skeptical LLM architectures are capable of anything more than the *appearance*, via programmed responses, of Selfness.

Could be wrong, certainly. I trust we'll find out before FSD is complete. 😁

My conspiracy theory is that there are still good people in the world, and may we all rise. May the thinking and actions of my life be written deep with the poetry of my humanity, not darkened by the limitations of my ego or selfness.

If not, then likely they are opposing someone else's selfness while clinging to their own. Stones and glass houses, to borrow from a Jewish bodhisattva. It may be useful to lead them to reflect on why their self is triggered by seeing Pride festivities. This can be an excellent learning experience.

Queer selfness is no less insubstantial at the ultimate level than heterosexuality and cisgender identity. If a straight critic is OK to always be misgendered, wear clothing of the other gender, and to date someone of their own sex, they may have detached enough to be able to speak from no-selfless.

...useful construction of evolution. And since we inherit the need to survive, present via the ancestors of every cell in our body, our organs, and our symbiotic microbiome, our sense of selfness is very strong, and that lends weight to Cartesian gravity. AI cannot have this property.
