#SemanticScholar
SemanticScholar is more like Google Scholar Labs because it uses NLP on your query and provides AI summaries of papers... it may have improved but it also used to megafail in many non-science disciplines (comp lit, history, etc.) because its corpus of scholarly literature was focused on science*

It all starts with a keyword search: #NewsAPI scans recent news, #SemanticScholar digs through academic papers. Then the Scout Agent steps in, vetting the results and discarding anything off-topic.

AI agents can browse the web directly, but a well-designed query is more efficient.

thanks! I just had a look and it seems like eLife articles are completely missing from semanticscholar? Is that correct?

The tool attempts to extract a .bib file from an ACL-formatted PDF and then cross-references those items with SemanticScholar, OpenAlex, DBLP, etc. If you have keys for those services, it uses them and goes faster. The PDF-to-bib is only an best-effort, so there's definitely mistakes

This profile lists three papers by Enid Mary Barraud (1904–1972); three papers by ???

No facility to report the issue.

Do better, SemanticScholar

I just cut off SemanticScholar from one of our sites since they were disobeying robots.txt.

But one also wonders why @ai2.bsky.social 's #SemanticScholar is indexing rando's websites like this.

I mean, I can see why you might want to catch pdves that authors post of their *own* papers, but that's not what's going on here.

Noticed something on about @ai2.bsky.social 's #SemanticScholar today -- for some reason the page for Bender & Koller 2020 has among its pdf links a link to the personal webpage of Gwern

I understand perfectly well how scientific publishing works, you've just failed to provide an adequate explanation for why you don't have any publications on ResearchGate, OrcID or SemanticScholar from any more recently than 2016 (barring that one commentary article).

Well thanks for clarifying at least. Pretty remarkable that he's written papers on covid given that his last paper listed on SemanticScholar is from 2016. How remarkably prescient he must be!

We have finally started minting DOIs for our blog using Rogue Scholar (docs.rogue-scholar.org) and migrated from Distill to Quarto.

The first post analyses the reference coverage between #openalex and #semanticscholar using 37 million journal articles between 2015-23.

Took me a surprisingly long time to figure out, so in case you’re struggling as well: #semanticscholar features its own PDF reader prominently, but makes it quite difficult to find the actual link to the original paper. Easiest way seems to be the DOI above the […]

SemanticScholar Paper Finder convinced me a carefully tuned specialist system can still beat a generalist system, even in AI. Every chatbot gives me buzzy tangentially related refs, while only SSPF actually picks and explains the most relevant. It’s enough to un-bitter-lesson me a bit tbh.
