not necessarily a sign of its times so much as its author, but I like that WATCHMEN intends to treat Dr. Manhattan as the sole supernatural element and the squid thing causing a psychic blast that hurts psychic sensitives is just a fact of ordinary science
it's always funny to see what's treated as crankishness or common sense in books in the past. there's a Robertson Davies book published in *1988* in which being alarmed by drinking during pregnancy is a sign of being an overly concerned health nut. (I think he was well behind the times on this tho)

The idea that Force users, if left to their own devices, will seek power over non-Force sensitives (even if they don't necessarily become Space Hitler) suggests that progroms against Force sensitives (like the Jedi purge) might have been more common in galactic history than previously thought.

My head-canon is still that midi-chlorians are attracted to the Force (hence why powerful Force sensitives have so many of them) but are not the source.

They aren't cops and generally don't like this either, and because of that predisposition plus the legal and political sensitives of the whole situation, what you end up with is the civilian feds being trigger-happy and glowering at people while the soldiers are all smiles and trying to be harmless.
