When Can You Hear Dolly Parton’s Final Recording? 13 November, on U2’s Carnaval De Luz
The last vocal Dolly Parton ever recorded is a duet with Bono, and it closes **_Carnaval De Luz_** , **U2** ‘s first album of new material in **nine years** , out on **Friday, 13 November 2026**. Until then, fans have **_Silencio_** , a loud, two-and-a-half-minute single that landed on **24 September** with a music video shot in Mexico City.
U2 has history here. Singapore got its first U2 show on _The Joshua Tree Tour_ , which also took the band to Seoul, Manila, and Mumbai for the first time. If you were at that show, or you’ve been hearing about it from someone who was, _Silencio_ is already on streaming platforms and as a digital download. You can play it on Spotify or pick your platform here. Pre-orders and pre-saves for the album are open now.

If U2 lives in your head mostly as the band your parents argue about, here’s the short version. Formed in **Dublin in 1976** , the band has sold **175 million albums** , won **22 Grammys** , and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
The timing of this album is deliberate. In September 1976, a 14-year-old Larry Mullen Jr. pinned a handwritten note to the noticeboard at Mount Temple Comprehensive School on Dublin’s Northside. It read _“Drummer Seeks Musicians To Form Band”_ , and Bono, The Edge, and Adam Clayton answered it. On **25 September 2026** , fifty years later, the band went back to Mount Temple for a surprise set for students and staff, and played _Silencio_ live for the first time. That’s a lovely way to celebrate a birthday!
## Nine Years Is a Technicality
The “nine years” figure is accurate for full albums of new songs. The last one, _Songs of Experience_ , came out in December 2017 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The band has barely paused since then. _Songs of Surrender_ re-recorded 40 older U2 songs in March 2023, _Atomic City_ arrived that September, and the band opened the Sphere in Las Vegas with a **40-date residency**.
2026 has been the busiest year yet:
* **18 February (Ash Wednesday):** _Days of Ash_ , a surprise six-track EP (extended play, shorter than an album), with Ed Sheeran and Taras Topolia on _Yours Eternally_
* **Good Friday:** _Easter Lily_ , a second surprise six-track EP
* **July:** _Street of Dreams_ , the first song taken from the new album
* **24 September:** _Silencio_
* **13 November:** _Carnaval De Luz_

By the end of the year the band will have released **24 new songs**.
Those EPs and the album belong together. They follow the Christian calendar, so _Carnaval De Luz_ sits before them in the story as the carnival, a blowout celebration of the flesh ahead of Lent’s quiet reflection and Easter’s rebirth. The album was recorded in the same stretch of sessions as the EPs, so treat it as the third chapter rather than a surprise comeback.
## Silencio Clocks in at 2:35
_Silencio_ runs **two minutes and 35 seconds**. Ryan Tedder added production, and the video comes from **Cliqua** , the Mexican-American directing duo Pasqual Gutiérrez and Raúl “RJ” Sanchez. Short, noisy, and fast is the right call for a band in its 50th year. It tells you U2 still wants to make a racket instead of a victory lap.
Listeners are split so far. U2’s announcement post on X had about **7,200 likes and 1,300 reposts** by 26 September. Some replies loved the punk energy, while others called the song overworked or even “desperate”. That split is a good sign, because a legacy band that nobody argues about has stopped taking risks.
The Edge is clearly enjoying himself. He calls the record “a messy, provocative, sacred collection of songs” and notes, with a straight face, that it has “the first-ever use of flat-wound strings on a U2 recording. Just saying.” For non-guitarists, those are smoother strings that give a rounder, thuddier tone, which fits the retro surf sound of _Silencio_.
## Dolly Parton’s Last Recorded Vocal
The emotional centre of the album comes last. _Torn_ is a duet between Bono and the late Dolly Parton, co-written by U2, Parton, and Johnny McDaid. The band calls it a tender country song about broken family ties. Producer Jacknife Lee has said that Parton approved the final mix.
Daniel Lanois plays pedal steel on the track, the sliding, crying guitar that gives classic country its ache. Nobody outside the studio has heard _Torn_ yet, so the reaction so far is anticipation rather than tears. The song is meant to link the album to both EPs, and it deserves to be heard in order after the other 11 tracks, not pulled onto a playlist on day one.
Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. walk fully suited into the sea for the Carnaval De Luz shoot
## Garrix, Eno, and Rosalía Join In
The guest list reaches well beyond rock:
* **Brian Eno** co-wrote and played synthesiser on _Go (Carnaval De Luz)_ , _The Greatest Show on Earth_ , and _Can’t Stop Us Now_
* **Martin Garrix** co-wrote _Glorify_
* **Rosalía** appears on _The Mirror Maker_
Jacknife Lee produced the whole record across a series of locations, and the 12 songs deal with spirituality, friendship, freedom, and holding on when things get dark.
Bono’s sales pitch sounds like a circus ringmaster. “Roll up, roll up, roll up! Bring your purple socks, your broken hearts, your rose-tinted naivety,” he says, before landing on the line that explains the whole project: “if the world is in darkness we better not be.”
If you only queue three songs on release day, pick these:
1. **_Glorify_.** A Garrix co-write on a U2 song is the most unexpected pairing on the record.
2. **_The Mirror Maker_.** Listen for how Rosalía’s voice sits next to Bono’s.
3. **_Torn_.** Save it for the end, the way the band intended.
