Our Rule of Law, Constitution Day,  Citizenship Day, and the New York County Lawyers Association The President of the New York Country Lawyers Association (NYCLA) issued a statement, https://lnkd.in/g8XETMRC , which began: ·      September 17 is #ConstitutionDay, marking the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787. It is also #CitizenshipDay, a time to recognize both the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and to honor the contributions of American citizens, whether by birth or by naturalization. This day is an opportunity not only to celebrate, but also to reflect on the Constitution, the rule of law, and the spirit of unity that helped establish and sustain the world’s first #representativedemocracy that has not only endured but has become more inclusive.    The NYCLA President concluded with a plea to We, the People who can preserve our Constitution and the principles that it embodies: ·      As we observe Constitution Day, we should consider Washington’s warning [about excessive partisanship] and ask ourselves whether we continue to see one another as #fellowcitizens, united by shared principles and values, or whether partisan divisions and hate-filled rhetoric by both sides have so deepened our differences as to place our great republican experiment at risk. Will we still enjoy the benefits of good laws under a #freegovernment, that may and need to be improved, or will widespread suspicion, distrust and alarm threaten both? As citizens, we have a responsibility to vote according to our consciences. As lawyers, we have an additional responsibility to consider what we can do to preserve the rule of law and the constitutional principles that sustain #ourRepublic. Ensuring the continued integrity of our election is an essential part of preserving today and for future generations our Constitution, and the rights and liberties we hold dear. #RuleofLaw #September17 #Democracy #OurConstitution #Citizenship
