i've said before that the US Civil War being primarily formal armies fighting each other in setpiece battles really clouds a lot of americans understanding of what an actual civil war looks like
People don't understand that civil conflict looks like your neighbors dragging you out of bed in the middle of the night and executing you in your living room simply because they're suspicious you might be a political enemy, and it really shows sometimes.

Going 1-0 up off a setpiece and then shutting the game down under the eyes of GG, just as the scriptures foretold 🙏🏻

My biggest pet peeve of animated films lately is the Finding Nemo format where Act 2 sorta wanders from setpiece to setpiece as an exploration movie. It can be done well (like Nemo) but so many animated films just feel like extended list jokes and the setting never feels like a contiguous world

I genuinely forgot how amazing the Wheel setpiece is.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Peak. They pick up from the fairly self-contained first film and build into a new trilogy so effortlessly. Action, direction, sets, and music continue to be some of the best.
So glad I could get Jordan's reaction to my favorite ending to a film.

I, too, miss me a good linear encounter+setpiece -based FPS campaign
Hey! New article! This one's about the history of first person shooters, what makes 'em work, and why I like the shooters I like. It's also me lamenting how they've died, and talking a bit about why I want to go ahead and make one.

first person shooters are extremely fun, but the industry rarely makes the ones i like anymore
There’s something about that anticipation as your dropship passes over open ocean and the fighting on the beach comes into view…

that was fun! got to the train graveyard in about 3 hours, and that was with us voice acting most of the characters, so i'm making pretty good time
it was also very funny for her to see how quickly the game moves from setpiece to setpiece, compared to how Remake expands and pads things

I say this as an actual video game writer: that movie has a weak video game story. it bops around from setpiece to unconnected setpiece, you have no reason to care about the main character except that it's your POV, and the only memorable stuff is the party members who join you for reasons unclear

So, scored from *a* setpiece.
Arsenal double their lead at Turf Moor - and it is a first Premier League away goal of the season not scored from a set-piece.
Declan Rice heads in from a Leandro Trossard cross after the away side counter-attacked from a Burnley long throw.

Kolchak is back. He's in Seattle and on the trail of a historic murderer
I think I vibed with Stalker more. But there's some good, creepy stuff here. The final setpiece is worth the watch
