#Octember Maira is probably Sextans. And after sniggering about the name, she'd agree.

The sextant is the tool that represents the Fallen Star and, by extension, Maira. She seeks direction - a sextant would help with that.

To the Nebraskans who jeered and cheered to Trump’s comment to “Take out” Los Angeles and San Diego:

I highly doubt Gerald Ford would have ever said anything that horrific about his fellow Americans. He served in the US Navy during WWII.

San Diego is home to the Pacific fleet and US Navy.

I know absolutely nothing, so making these up.

Wyd: a serpent with a forked tongue

Feylie: a centaur with horns

Simon: a sextant

Reena: cupid with a bow and arrow

All that reading I’ve done about whether the sextant or chronometer was placed correctly in the box during transport to the ship is gonna pay off now.

are those TV aerials medieval?

also, chimney pots too modern, manufactured slate, lead flashing, those look like double-glazed dormer windows, what even is that thing he's holding (on cloudy day no less), why's he on the roof, & England has had roads for millennia you don't need a sextant mate
Let's play another fun game of can you spot what's wrong with this pile of ai slop...

Yes, much like jetliners of the era had glass sextant ports in the cockpit ceiling so the flight engineer could determine their position by celestial navigation.

Pretty accurate eastwards until about Pickering nuclear, then it goes a bit too squiggly.

Anytime these old maps resemble reality really shows the skilled observations of whoever made them w such limited tech. A sextant and nautical spyglass?
On this date in 1757, the Toronto shoreline was first detailed on a French map. It identifies the Credit River (Rivière au Credit), the Humber River (R. Toronto), Fort Rouillé on the Exhibition Grounds, and the Scarborough Bluffs (Les Grandes Ecores).

I kept trying to post a bunch of photos yesterday but bluesky kept eating the post, so here's one of 'em by itself.

16/25 What did they use? The octant of 1731 measured up to 90 degrees, not enough for wide Moon-Sun distances. In 1757, a naval captain, John Campbell, who had tried lunars at sea, proposed a sixth of a circle: 120 degrees. The first sextant was built in 1759.

17/25 How did it work? One observer brings the Moon's bright limb to the Sun's limb, or to a star, in the sextant. At the same moment, two others take the altitudes of both bodies, and someone notes the watch. Repeat and take the mean.

Love the putti in this pendiment on an 1860s commercial building on St Vincent Street in Glasgow. Given how they're handling the sextant, I'm not too sure I'd trust the two on the right with navigating the boat they're busy loading up!

Aaaand technically the sextant is a theoretica skill but that's just a back-up plan.🤣

They're getting lazy nowadays, I suppose.
Not even a sextant in sight on that bridge.

L'ancien panneau à aiguilles a cédé sa place à un écran numérique flambant neuf, les détails esthétiques sont plus nets et la flèche a entièrement été rénovée, mêlant subtilement le « D » du land et le « I » d'information à un sextant de navigation.

Needs a sextant, compass, and sidereal time, but I guess you have to start somewhere.
(A little crystal too, just for mystery!)
