How activism attracts hateful disordered freaks because it allows them to perform maximal public cruelty under a banner of justification.

When I was new to psychoanalytic ideas, I appreciated the writings of Glen Gabbard, Nancy McWilliams, and Jonathan Shedler. The psychoanalytic community has to work all the more to be welcoming because:
a) The theory can be quite daunting;
b) Psychoanalysis has a bad reputation for arrogance
If you're new to psychoanalytic ideas, what authors do you like and why?

Hi Bluesky people, 🎉 @jonathanshedler.bsky.social aka Jonathan Shedler is here! He writes some of the most compelling threads (on the bird app) about psychology and psychoanalysts. Highly recommend 🕶️

There's a psychiatrist named Jonathan Shedler who wrote a pretty good analysis that explains behavior on both Twitter and Bluesky:

It happens across the political spectrum. I wrote my own blog post and expanded a bit on Shedler's insight:

Jonathan Shedler on X: "1/ One of most important things I've learned: Severe personality problems find *camouflage.* No one thinks “I’m a sadist” or “I'm a malignant narcissist.” They find a belief system/social group that validates their most hateful, destructive impulses & construes them as virtues." / X

@drwilliamsharp.bsky.social 1/4)The term "evidence-based therapy" often gets thrown around, but looking at the data, significant doesn't mean meaningful. Shedler(2015) highlights flagship NIMH data on a depression trial that found just a 1.2 difference between CBT and placebo on a 54-pt scale.

Shedler pointed out how 2/3 of patients are excluded from clinical trials due to multiple diagnoses, suicidality, etc. Research leaves out the exact people that clinicians would regularly see. It’s not very representative of the clinical population they want to study @drwilliamsharp.bsky.social

"The fundamental insight of psychoanalysis is the mind is divided against itself. We are of two (or more) minds about most everything.

Psychological health is about integrating the discordant parts and recognizing they are all the same self.

In this way, we become more whole."

So...ugh. It's either Shedler-esque (concise and affirming but basically a blog essay) or gets bogged down in psychoanalytical jargon. Even my regulatory association's site doesn't have anything that really nails what you're looking for. Why? ->

Jonathan Shedler astutely wrote, “Guilt is self-referential. It’s one part of the personality attacking another. The hurt person is secondary.” Moral perfectionism is founded on shame, which results from the sense of one’s tainted essence. www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/perf...
Moral Perfectionism and the Selfishness of Shame
Moral perfectionism is associated with excessive pride, which often blinds us from others' needs while making us falsely believe that we're good and thoughtful people.
