Moral Perfectionism and the Selfishness of Shame
Moral perfectionism is associated with excessive pride, which often blinds us from others' needs while making us falsely believe that we're good and thoughtful people.

Shedler pointed out how 2/3 of patients are excluded from clinical trials due to multiple diagnoses, suicidality, etc. Research leaves out the exact people that clinicians would regularly see. It’s not very representative of the clinical population they want to study @drwilliamsharp.bsky.social

Shedler puts into perspective how research is monetarily driven just like any other field, and it too centers the optics. Positive results are sought after because they can be portrayed as having a wow factor, despite negative results being just as important. @drwilliamsharp.bsky.social #Psyc4666

Shedler also highlights how the word "research" is associated with a level of transparency that does not always exist, facilitating the spread of misinformation. In media, I often see the assumption of causality just from a "statistically significant" finding. @drwilliamsharp.bsky.social #Psyc4666

I couldn't agree more with what Shedler said at the end about good practices for seeing if someones claims about the benefit of a treatment are actually true. Crazy that the study could not even exist! @drwilliamsharp.bsky.social

Shedler (2016) rose the question for me: "Do we believe what we seek out to find?" He sought to find the ineffectiveness of CBT and succeeded. Obviously, other researchers do the same. Do we all resort to findings that match our biases or is there a clear "right/wrong"? @drwilliamsharp.bsky.social

4/4) As Shedler suggests: read the studies yourself. Don't be fooled by researchers who exclude participants to skew results, under-train "control" therapists, advertise vague statistics to sound impressive, or omit data that undercuts the "evidence-based" narrative. Question the hype, always.

@drwilliamsharp.bsky.social 1/4)The term "evidence-based therapy" often gets thrown around, but looking at the data, significant doesn't mean meaningful. Shedler(2015) highlights flagship NIMH data on a depression trial that found just a 1.2 difference between CBT and placebo on a 54-pt scale.

Shedler (2015) states how published research has fed into the idea that traditional therapy is labeled as "inadequate" because it does not follow a manualised approach. Why is there a need to follow a scripted approach when treating humans? One size does not fit all.

I feel like a fool because Shedler pointed this out probably 3 years ago on Twitter and I scoffed at the idea.

Ironically the intro psych prof who sparked my interest in psych was exactly the anti-Freud guy Shedler describes, but nothing could convince me there wasn’t a profound truth behind the defense mechanisms!

A colleague sent me a link to a podcast Shedler has which goes towards popular clarity. I admit to not being a podcast listener, but worth a listen. I'd love to write about this approach, but between my practice and writing fiction, there's so little time. podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/p...
