I have deleted my X/Twitter account. I urge others to do the same.

It can no longer pretend to be anything other than a danger and harm to our democracy. My full statement is below:

I’ve always valued social media as a way to connect directly with people — sharing information, listening to different views, and engaging with communities. Platforms like Twitter have in the past played an important role in allowing MPs to stay accessible, promote transparency, and ensure the concerns of the public are heard loud and clear. Unfortunately, since Elon Musk’s takeover, Twitter/X has become a deeply toxic space that no longer serves those purposes. His actions—spreading conspiracy theories and enabling the spread of disinformation — pose a real danger to democracy and public trust. The blatant promotion of dangerous narratives, including efforts to undermine legitimately elected governments, has become intolerable. Twitter/X has shifted from being a platform for open discussion to a tool for manipulation and division. The same style graphic as previous, with the text continuing as follows: Musk’s interference in how information is shared — by pushing certain voices forward, reinstating and personally sharing content from accounts that promote hate, while sidelining other voices — has destroyed the neutrality needed for honest, fair public debate. Instead of fostering transparency, Twitter/X is now a platform that actively undermines the values I believe are crucial for democracy. I cannot continue to use a platform that has become so harmful. After long consideration I have therefore deleted my Twitter/X account. I’ll continue to find other ways to engage with constituents and communities, and I hope this decision highlights just how urgent it is to push back against the spread of disinformation and the misuse of social media platforms. We need digital spaces that support truth, democracy, and fairness—not ones that tear them down.
