From Magpie's introduction in Ch6.

I struggled to find something not interwoven with dialogue and I'm not confident that I have a distinct narrative voice.

(Sentences change by the time I record as well, so they're more natural to speak aloud. Often words like 'for' become 'fay' when spoken.)
The airship had barely touched down on the obsidian of The Wastes when The Witch’s shieling hut appeared, like an invitation, in Callan’s eyeline. On the surface it was typical of a shieling- a small, drystane structure, with a peat sod roof and no windows. Though rarer this far down The Map, the shieling might pass as a perfectly normal old dwelling, even with its lack of door; to a layman at least. A quick glance had told Callan everything he needed to know. Too many impossibly placed jumper stones, moss growing across their surfaces but suspiciously absent between the cracks and not a shred of light spilled between the gaps in the stone either. An amateur might’ve been taken in, instead, Callan continued wrangling his rowdy band of subordinates for the proceeding exploit. No matter how many miles his company clip-clopped along on the obsidian, the hut remained, parallel to his line of sight, sometimes shifting to the other side, as if it thought he simply hadn’t noticed. It remained, without so much as a passing acknowledgment from any of his peers. Even once the group arrived outside The Observatory’s tall doors, dismounted and rolled up their sleeves, heavy bags of tools slung over their shoulders, the shieling quietly persisted, stalking like a starved fox.

'Ye'll find Mary and Tam in ther bothie up by they twa staunin stanes.'
Shieling bothy and two upright stones, prob. not neolithic but good identifiers in the landscape and not used for building. It doesn't stop them having some significance.

Two standing stones in a moorland setting with part of a rainbow showing. Two standing stones in a moorland setting with a commercial woodland in the distance. Also showing remains of a shieling bothy in the foreground left.

Do you need individual identification for it or can you check the quantity of available resources, build within that limit and reduce the scree accordingly?

See photo of an old "shieling" near mine. There are hundreds of them around here, your wee villages remind me of them at the moment

That should have read shieling...
The change meant studying a hedge. Other studies included a sheep & interpreting the archaeological record a bit.

#drawing
Pencil study of a man 'laying a hedge'. He is wearing a wide flat cap and has tied twine around his trousers. He is training the branches of the hedge to form a barrier to animals such as sheep. A study of a Swaledale sheep with other sheep sheltering behind a high drystone wall. A field barn and distant hills can be seen in the background. Pencil and watercolour notes on archaeological record plan and a fragment of stone footings.

No age verification on this one, could be old or very very old. Its just outside a scheduled area on a knoll near a large circa 20 buildings shieling, also just outside the scheduled area 🧐 and is unnamed; pos. Strondrum.

Too many really to list.
Travellers will be especially wary of feral horses near bogs & water, as well as seals.
And perhaps most worryingly, deer on The Wastes -a barren area encased in glass- often announce a sighting of the Obsidian Witch, or her shieling at least.
All Sìthe of course.

#AugustWorldbuilders, are there any entities associated with magic in your world? For instance, Gods associated with magic, spirits, animal familiars, summoned creatures, or anything you can think of?

Or contact this Swedish butter maker and ask where they bought theirs:

Or ask for good enough pics and measurement to have one made new by a local woodworker from appropriate wood (beech?).

I've not given any thought to Albums Of The Year. Far too early! But regardless, this might be my favourite *individual track* of the last twelvemonth.

That August night
the Perseid shower rained
on moor and lily-loch, on a frightened world –

with all our tat…

One of Us by Kathleen Jamie We are come in a stone boat, a miracle ship that steers itself round skerries where guillemots and shags stand still as graves. Our sealskin cloaks are clasped by a fist-sized penannular brooch, our slippers are feathery gugas’ necks: so delicate we carried them over the wracky shore, past several rusted tractors. Truth: this was a poor place, a ragged land all worn to holes. No one, nothing, but a distant Telecom van, a bungalow tied with fishing floats for want of flowers. That August night the Perseid shower rained on moor and lily-loch, on a frightened world – on us, in a roofless shieling with all our tat: the golden horn of righteousness, the justice harp; what folks expect. We took swans’ shape to cross the Minch, one last fling with silly magic – at our first mainland steps a dormobile slewed into a passing place; cameras flashed. So we stayed high, surprised a forester making aeolian flutes from plastic tubes, he shared his pay. ‘Avoid the A9. For God’s sake, get some proper clothes.” We ditched the cloaks, bought yellow Pringle sweaters in Spean Bridge, and house by safe house arrived in Edinburgh. So far so tedious: we all hold minor government jobs, lay plans, and bide our time.
