I love this image of the Great Buddha statue in Nara, with the tiny monks capturing the grand size of the statue (15 m/50 ft).

An imperial palace called Kuni-kyo was built by Emperor Shomu in what is now Kizugawa City, Kyoto Prefecture.
This palace served as the capital of Japan from 740 to 744.
In the fall, the site is adorned with beautifully blooming cosmos flowers.

It's thought that Higan (彼岸) began in the reign of Emperor Shōmu (聖武天皇 701-56).
As the main work of harvesting crops drew to a close, people had more time to themselves. Buddhist sects encouraged self-reflection and held sermons to help people reconnect with Buddha.

奈良といえば飛鳥時代からの美術品があれこれあって霊獣がテーマのものもあれこれあるわけですが。
エンテイはどこから来たのかなとちょっと考えました。
ひとつには奈良の都ということで聖武天皇から帝つながりでエンテイ(炎の皇帝)にしたのかなというのが推測です。
もうひとつはこのポケふたの近くにある法隆寺金堂の柱にある獅子から選んだのかなぁとも思います。
本当のところはちょっとわかりません💦

It seems that Ekan (慧灌 'Hyegwan'), a monk from the Korean kingdom of Goguryeo, first founded a monastic complex here in 629.
Originally known as Hannyadai (般若台), in 735 Emperor Shōmu renamed the temple Hannya-ji (般若寺) after gifting it a copy of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra.

Following a small-pox epidemic, famine, and rebellion, Emperor Shōmu in 737 decided to construct a Buddhist prayer hall for the nation.
The original site in Shiga chosen for Tōdai-j was plagued with forest fires. So many problems struck that it was feared the native gods were angry!

Major archaeological find! More than 1,000 wooden tablets (mokkan) found related to the Daijōsai, an incredibly important but poorly documented enthronement harvest ritual. These are from the enthronement of Shomu in 724. 🤯
