Okay, that was funny. I was watching a bodycam video on YouTube, and a shoplifting suspect was trying to play the race card against an officer of the same ethnicity. The cop then told the man he should have stolen an application instead of misusing the race card.

Prior to online shopping I spent a lot of money at Neiman Marcus. For decades they only accepted American Express and no other credit cards. The hardest part was the actual racism I experienced while shopping there. Followed while shopping, hearing shoplifting warnings referring to me when I was

There are a number of negative externalities to society at large for allowing criminality, and economic externalities for shoplifting in particular. Losses are socialized as increased prices, which hurts customers of that store, and also raises the baseline that competitors use for pricing.

And, like, iew, gross? Like go take up shoplifting and leave women and femmes and whoever you’ve targeted out of it.

I didn't say it was fully automated! I said it was indistinguishable from shoplifting.

As someone who works in retail, shoplifting is very rarely reported. Basically, unless we get them doing it on camera, we get their face, we get their license plate, it's felony level, we saw them do it in the first place, and we have time to spare to file a report we don't report a damn thing.

I'm reminded of a quote (i've forgotten who said it) that a sufficiently advanced self service store will [eventually? already?] be indistinguishable from shoplifting.

These laws also limit the ability of stores to find their own ways to stop shoplifting in lower-cost ways (which is clearly the union’s goal). European grocery stores often have exit gates that must be scanned with a receipt, a concept that Lidl is now bringing to America:

I find it really strange in these stories that nobody challenges the logic of the government imposing rules on businesses to stop shoplifting that only hurts the businesses themselves. Why would the government need to regulate that if there’s no negative externality??

When I was in my 20s a store manager caught me shoplifting. Things were very intense, he took my ID and all my info, then let me go. As I walked out I didn't even realize he still had my ID.

Then he called my phone and offered to trade sex and my ID back for it to not go any further.

i mean, they just outright said that nobody is mistaken to commit sexually assault, just that it's a crime

which is exactly where something like, say, shoplifting falls. frames it as something where the act itself is fine, it's just a mistake to get /caught/

There was no nationwide shoplifting surge. Any increases in theft were localized and the result of region specific conditions.
Myth vs. Reality: Trends in Retail Theft
Despite spikes in some cities, crime data doesn’t show a nationwide increase in shoplifting and other forms of retail theft.

Robert Jenrick calls for shop security staff to be given more powers amid shoplifting 'epidemic': 'Sick of it!'
Robert Jenrick has called for "greater powers" to be given to security staff in Britain's shops as the nation faces an "epidemic" of shoplifting. Speaking to GB News, the Reform UK Treasury Spokesman declared that staff must stop being "urban scarecrows" and standing around, watching the crime happen. ### Mr Jenrick took the law into his own hands after sharing footage of himself confronting a brazen shoplifter in Brixton. In the video, the Reform MP calls out the man for appearing to take a bottled drink from a shop, asking why he "thinks he is above the law". ### TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say ### Reflecting on the incident, Mr Jenrick told GB News he is "sick" of the growing shoplifting "epidemic" across the country. He said: "I'm absolutely sick of this epidemic of shoplifting that we're seeing on our streets, people brazenly going into shops and nicking things. "Some parts of our country now have got, frankly, feral people going in every couple of minutes into the likes of Greggs, just picking stuff off the shelves." He argued that the rise in theft is "destroying the high-trust society" Britain once was. ### ### ### The MP said: "I was in Brixton market during the week and saw it for myself. It's absolutely disgusting. It's destroying the high-trust society that we all want to see, and it is costing people money that they can't afford. "It is costing the average family over £50 a week and that is rising rapidly because acquisitive crime, shoplifting is ballooning in much of the country right now." Detailing what his party would do to tackle the issue, Mr Jenrick set out three ways in which they can reduce crime in our shops. He told GB News: "What is Reform going to do about it? Well, we're going to get more police officers out on the street, and we're actually going to instruct them to arrest these people and send them to jail, the opposite of what the Labour Government is doing. ### LATEST DEVELOPMENTS * 'You think you're above the law?!' Robert Jenrick confronts brazen shoplifter in broad daylight * Suella Braverman brands Andy Burnham's Brexit U-turn 'slap in the face to British patriots' * Andy Burnham branded a 'con man' after paving way for Brexit U-turn: 'Master of fake authenticity!' ### ### ### "On average, it takes 30 convictions for these types of offences to even go to jail, and now you're seeing, thanks to Andy Burnham and the early release scheme, these people just waltzing out of prison. "Enough. We've got to restore the basic norms in our country. You pay for things in shops and law abiding people are protected." Mr Jenrick also called for security staff in stores to be given "greater powers" to restrain those who steal until the police arrive. He explained: "When I was in Brixton market during the week, about every 10 minutes something was being stolen and no police whatsoever, so there is a need for a stronger police presence on our high streets. That would be a deterrent. ### ### ### "Secondly, I'd actually like to see the security guards outside these stores be given greater powers so that they can hold on to these people until the police are able to arrive. "Enough of what's known as urban scarecrows, just standing there watching it happen. That is degrading our society because people think they're a joke." Mr Jenrick argued: "And actually, although I don't believe in vigilantism, I do think it's time to fight back a bit, and for law abiding people to call out those who are breaking the law, who are stealing things and have the courage to stand up and be counted. "Because we love this country, we love the norms of our country. We don't want to see this degraded and the high-trust society that I certainly feel I grew up in just be trashed by feral people who don't care one jot about this country." ### **Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter**
