1977, driving from Casper, WY, to Shoshoni, WY, by myself around 9pm in November, a light appeared above the highway in my rearview mirrors and followed me until I got near Shoshoni, then it shot up and off. I know a lot of folks that have seem similar things on that stretch of highway.

A high-alpine lake, known as Lake Isabelle, sits quietly in the foreground, its deep blue surface partially rimmed with the remnants of winter ice. The lake is framed by the rugged terrain of Colorado’s Indian Peaks Wilderness, part of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Behind the lake rise steep, craggy peaks — most notably Shoshoni Peak to the right and the Niwot Ridge stretching to the left — their rocky faces still veined with spring snowfields that cling to north-facing slopes and glacial cirques. The surrounding slopes are a patchwork of talus, exposed bedrock, and subalpine vegetation, revealing the geological layering and forces that shaped this basin over millennia of glacial activity. In the foreground, weathered granite boulders and clusters of stunted alpine fir and spruce trees hug the lake’s edge, hinting at the harsh winds and short growing seasons typical of this elevation, just above 10,800 feet. The air is crisp and thin, the silence punctuated only by the sound of snowmelt-fed streams rushing unseen below the ice. The sky overhead is a deep, uninterrupted blue — a clear, dry Colorado day that highlights the contrast between the snow’s stark whiteness, the warm-toned granite, and the shadowed lake below. Craters of the Moon Nat’l Monument (known originally as Tennambo’i, meaning Antelope’s Trail in Shoshoni) is was used as a training ground for Apollo astronauts in 1969 🌖🌋
It’s also host to a bunch of cool endemic plants :D
